One dinghy and one purloined skiff.
“Aye aye, sir. Bosun’s mate—”
“Midships.”
“Midships, sir!”
He checked the compass, and told Jarratt, “Steer two-two-oh.” Then he raised his glasses again to study that activity inshore. He warned himself, in dread of what was coming now, Don’t count your chickens …
The air was like frozen steel, but he’d begun to sweat. For the first time in twenty years he was aware of being truly, deeply frightened.
POSTSCRIPT
The episode of Gauntlet ramming a German heavy cruiser is based on Glowworm’s single-handed action against Hipper at the same place and time. Glowworm was, of course, alone and the circumstances were entirely different. Thirty-five of her ship’s company survived and were picked up by Hipper, but her captain, Lieutenant-Commander G.B. Roope RN, was not one of them. He was later awarded a posthumous VC. The same decoration was awarded, also posthumously, to Captain B.A.W Warburton-Lee, who led the Second Flotilla’s attack on Narvik on 10 April.
