Even her own mother was paying her less and less attention. Zara was pretty sure she was fucking Davis, judging by the disgusting looks she threw his way any time they were in the same room. Apparently her father hadn’t meant all that much to her, and neither did her daughter anymore.
“Right, let’s get a move on.” The trucker reappeared, climbing into the driver’s side and not offering Zara any help with her backpack.
She’d packed only the essentials when she’d made a run for it. Not that she was entirely sure anyone gave a shit she was missing. But Davis was possessive of his creations, and he might come after her, which was why she was avoiding trains and airports. That and she was running out of money; the odd plastic Australian bills were dwindling.
She threw her bag up and hefted herself into the passenger seat as the giant engine of the truck rumbled to life.
Zara couldn’t see any other way out of the fucked-up situation. She needed to get to the one person who’d made it all possible—the one person whose very existence had given Davis what he’d needed to make Zara into an even bigger freak than she was before.
She needed to get to Evelyn Maynard.
There was only one way she could think to do that without getting caught by the police, the Melior Group, or worst of all, Davis Damari.
She only hoped Eve’s ex Harvey wouldn’t be too difficult to find.
