Desperate: I'll Do Anything for Love Page 16

by B. M. Hardin

I opened her front door and turned around. I never thought that this was the way that my story would end, but I liked this way better.

“Goodbye Kera,” I said to her.

Looking at the boxes filled with stuff and the labels, I knew that she was headed out, along with Nate and her mother and none of them would probably ever return.

She didn’t respond. She smiled, slightly, and she started to shut the door but she stopped.

  “Wait.”

  I looked at her.

“I spoke to Elroy before he died. I called him. I didn’t bother telling him the truth no matter how many questions he asked. I just let it be. He told me that he’d married you, which I already knew that. He’d said that it was my fault for leaving him and aborting the baby. Still, I didn’t say anything. I wished him luck and I told him to have a great life. But I also convinced him to go after the life insurance policy. I told him that life was too short and that he always wanted to make sure that he left something behind, especially because of his gambling problem and just in case he ended up in debt. And just in case the two of you had kids. I knew that he would take my advice and I knew that you would think that he was trying to kill you because of what I’d said. But most of all, I knew that you would make sure that you killed him first. And it worked. That’s what he gets for lying and cheating on me too. And that’s what you get for sleeping with my man for three years. Bitch!” She said, but weirdly she smiled and hurriedly shut the door.

  What! That little bitch!

So maybe he hadn’t been planning to kill me all along? Ha! Wow! I just kept getting played like a sucka’! I guess I wasn’t as smart as I’d thought that I was after all.

But you know what, even if he hadn’t mentioned the policy, the results would’ve still been the same. I still wanted him dead. I was already in revenge mode and planning to get back at him one way or the other. And his life was the only form of payment big enough to pay for all of the lies he’d told me and for him deceiving me.

I grinned and took a deep breath.

“Touché bitch. Touché,” I mumbled, though she couldn’t hear me.

Walking to my car, I spotted Nate parked across the street. It was as though he’d known that I would come there. His facial expression said that he knew that she’d probably just told me everything. But it is what it is. I looked at him but my smile caused him to lean his head to the side and stare at me confused.

I didn’t have anything to say at all. Our business was finished. I didn’t have any more use for him and he no longer needed to use me. I waved at him and he nodded his hat in my direction, and then he just pulled off.

  No harm. No foul.

I couldn’t blame anyone of us for the things that we’d done, or the decisions that we’d made. I could only blame love. Love was the reason for it all. Love is a scary thing isn’t it? Whether it’s the love for a companion, or a mate. Or whether it’s for your unborn child, or for a child that you wanted to make sure that he didn’t do the time for a crime that he didn’t commit. Love was something else and people did the unthinkable to have it. You would be surprised.

Getting into my car, and driving away, I had one last thought and really, it was the only thought that mattered.

I took off my wedding ring and band, tossed it out the window, and touched my stomach. Turning up the radio, I turned a song that reminded me of Elroy, and smiled as I listened to a song that as of this day, would remind me of victory.

In the name of love…I win. Again.

I tell you, folks take love for a game, and they even take people’s love for granted. But they had better be careful. Because you just don’t know what someone might do…especially if they’re desperate!
