"I love you too," he said, and pulled her down for another kiss. He had to claim her. He wouldn't give her up. She was his. He pulled back and looked into her eyes. "Lucy, I want to claim you as mine."

  "What does that mean?"

"It means that I bite you and you'll be with me forever. It also means that you'll be with me until I die. That's a long time," he said with a smile.

"Does that mean I'll be one of you?"

"No. We're born this way, not made."

"Okay, claim me. I want to be yours."

Mike never thought he'd hear those words. He wanted to so much, but he never thought he'd find someone who wanted him. Now he had a sister, parents, and a mate. His life was perfect. He rolled on top of her and devoured her lips. He had to get inside her. He had to feel her warmth. He kissed down her neck, sucking a nipple into his mouth. She tasted so good; he couldn't get enough of her. She grabbed his head and moaned. She was right – they had to be quiet, seeing as his parents were down the hall. He pinched her nipples between his fingers and took her moan into his mouth as he kissed her. He couldn't wait to claim her and have her as his for the rest of his life.

Lucy was nervous about Mike claiming her, but with the way he was devouring her mouth and the way he made her feel, she didn't really have the capacity to be too nervous. She wanted to be his forever. She couldn't wait, but she wasn't into pain. She ran from it, yet here she was, sleeping with Mike and letting him bite her. He lined himself up and thrust inside her. He covered her mouth with his hand, trying to keep her quiet as he kissed her neck. She got scared, and he seemed to notice because he went back to her mouth, their tongues dancing.

He created a rhythm, and the pleasure she was getting from him made her relax, so he went back to kissing her neck and sucking it. It felt so good. Everything felt good. He ran his teeth over her skin. She thought she wouldn't like it, but it just made everything so much better. Then he struck, his teeth embedding into her shoulder. She cried out her orgasm as she came, but his hand went over her mouth to try to quiet her scream.

She felt him licking her neck, probably to close the wound. She pulled his head up to kiss him again. She liked kissing him. He was a wonderful kisser. She could live off of them alone. Lucy felt him stiffen, then felt his seed as he came. He held on tight and, still buried deep inside her, pulled her onto her side. He nuzzled her neck while they both caught their breath. That was the best sex she'd ever had. She hoped he'd bite her again.

She stiffened as she remembered that his parents and the baby were right down the hall. She hoped they hadn’t been woken up. Lucy knew she and Mike had been loud. They’d tried not to be, but it had just been too good. She buried her face in Mike's chest, listening to see if the baby was crying or if there was movement. When she didn't hear anything, she relaxed, thankful that they weren't awake. She put her head on his chest, happy she now had him for the rest of her life. She hoped for a family and much more with him. She wanted to see little wolverines running around and playing with their father.

  Chapter 32

  Six months later

Lucy was in her room with her mom, Lexi, Sarah, and baby Emma. Her mom was helping her into her wedding dress, and Lexi was watching to make sure a hair didn’t come loose from the tight bun it was in. The process was a lot harder with her large belly. Looking in the mirror as her mom zipped her up, she was happy she didn’t look plain. Her makeup was subtle, but it made her look fresh and gave her a little sparkle. Her hair was perfect, with a few curls hanging down to accentuate her face, and her eyes sparkled with happiness. She was not plain Lucy; she was a princess.

“You look wonderful,” Sarah told her.

“I feel like a whale,” she said, putting her hand on her stomach.

“I know you do, but it’s the most wonderful feeling in the world,” her mom said.

“It is,” she said, rubbing the baby bump. It wasn’t that big yet: she was only four months along, but she was getting big and it seemed to be happening so fast. She loved every minute of it.

Mike had surprised her when she’d told him she was pregnant. He’d been so happy. He wouldn’t let her pick up anything that weighed more than ten pounds, and he’d made sure she didn’t overdo it. He’d sung to the baby every day and had long conversations with it. She’d never imagined the big man doing things like that. He loved them both so much.

There was a knock on the door before her father came in. “You look beautiful,” he said as he hugged her.

  “Thanks Dad.”

“Are you ready? It’s time,” he said.

Lucy took a deep breath and nodded. She felt like she shouldn’t be nervous, since she was already mated to Mike. There wasn’t anything more permanent than that, and she was so happy to be with him. But what if something went wrong? What if she tripped going down the aisle? What if she fell on her face?

When the door to the back yard opened, she saw Mike standing at the end of the long aisle in his black suit. He looked great: his hair was cut short and the black suit fit him in all the right places. And the look on his face – that made all her nerves run far away. He looked stunned and so happy to be there. It was perfect.

Mike watched as Lucy made her way down the aisle with her dad. She was so beautiful, especially with his baby inside of her. He couldn’t wait until it arrived. He loved Emma and loved holding her, but it wasn’t the same as having his own. He was so happy Lucy didn’t mind him touching her a lot. He loved feeling the baby kick and singing to it.

When Lucy reached him, all he wanted to do was pull her into his arms and kiss her. Instead, he had to settle for a kiss on the cheek and the warmth of her hand. He stepped closer, wanting nothing to separate them. He didn’t realize until he felt something that he was pressed against her stomach, and that the baby seemed to be very happy about what was going on. It was funny: he’d never wanted kids. He never thought he’d find anyone to have them with. He thought they were just annoying little things that liked to poop and pee on everything. Now he could see himself with ten. He liked seeing Lucy glowing like she had been, and he liked taking care of her like this. He knew he was overdoing it, but it was his baby and his heart that were most important to him. He couldn’t let anything happen to either.

After the ceremony, Mike made Lucy sit down. He didn’t want her exerting herself. He also made sure someone stayed with her if he wasn’t there. Bill told him he was being stupid, but he didn’t care. Mike went and got her a plate of food while he left her with his mom. She was holding Emma and talking to some of the guests. Seeing her like that made him want it all so much more. He hadn’t regretted one day since meeting Lucy. She was his heart and soul. Marking her as his mate was the best thing he had ever done.

The wedding was for her family. She couldn’t tell them about what he was, and her mom had insisted on a wedding once she found out Lucy was pregnant. He’d done it for her and no other reason. However, he’d been afraid the stress would be too much for her, so after he’d spoken to his mom, things had run very smoothly on the planning front. He didn’t want to lose the baby because of a silly human tradition.

Mike was surprised by how much his mom liked Lucy. Maybe it was because they were both writers, but they were acting more like best friends. Indeed, they were almost inseparable. There were plans for them to write a book together. Lucy had to teach her a few things about the computer first, however, but she was getting there. Their meeting was something he never thought would happen. He never thought he’d see his mom at his wedding.

“What are you thinking so hard about?” his dad asked.

“Lucy,” he said with a smile.

“I should have known, given that goofy smile on your face.” Mike looked at his father and saw him looking at Sarah with the same goofy smile. Lucy and his mom both looked at them and smiled back. They seemed just as happy as Mike and his dad were. They both made their way back to the table with plates in their hands
. They figured a buffet would be easier than a sit-down meal. Shifters tended to eat a lot more than ordinary humans, and with a buffet it was better.

“I love you,” Lucy said with a smile.

“I love you too,” he said, putting the plate in front of her.

“I wasn’t talking to you. I was talking to the plate filled with food,” Lucy said, picking up her knife and fork. “Do you think you could get me some chocolate sauce?”

“For what?” he asked. It was an odd request.

“Because I want to put it on my potatoes. I think it would taste really good.” Mike was confused. Who put chocolate on potatoes?

“Just go with it,” his father said. Mike nodded and went into the house. He wondered if the cravings were starting. She’d tended to eat some strange food to begin with, but he’d heard that the cravings could be pretty bad. When he headed back, chocolate syrup in hand, he saw a glass of milk in front of Lucy. He was glad she was drinking that instead of the soda he knew she liked to drink. He’d been working with her on eating more healthily for the baby.

“Here you go,” he said, handing her the bottle and kissing her temple.

“Thanks,” she said, and opened the bottle. He had to close his eyes. Mike could not watch her put chocolate on potatoes. He wasn’t a cook, but that was mutilating them in his opinion.

“It’s safe,” Mike’s father said to him. He opened his eyes and looked at the potatoes. They looked the same – no chocolate on them. Then he looked at the milk and saw it turning brown.

“You could have just told me you wanted chocolate milk,” he pouted.

Paul woke up when the slot at the bottom of the door opened. He watched as a bottle of water and a tray of food was shoved into his cell. This was how it had been since he’d woken up after being shot. He’d been patched up and left in this cell, and hadn’t left or seen anyone since. There were times when he wondered if they were putting something in his food. He would get tired after eating, and when he woke up, his bucket that acted like a toilet had been emptied, another had been filled with water, and a clean cloth had appeared.

The problem was he never knew when they were planning on doing it. He’d tried skipping meals so he could figure out who had him and what they wanted from him, but it never worked. He didn’t know why he was locked up or what they wanted. He didn’t like being in that position.

Grabbing the tray, he started eating. The food wasn’t bad. It wasn’t gourmet, but it was tolerable. The lock was disengaged and the door swung open. Were they ready to kill him? The drugs they’d given him started to kick in, making him woozy. He set the tray down and stretched out on the cot he had. He wanted to stay up for the person who was walking in, but these were some strong drugs.

A face appeared in front of him and Paul looked up to see who his captor was. It was the same face he’d seen in a file so many times, and the same face he’d seen in the bar. One of the most vicious shifters alive. Paul was looking into Emily’s eyes, but for the first time ever, they looked kind. “Hello Paul.”
