“I’m not ruling it out, but she’s running out of time,” Jack replied. “She needs to find a sugar daddy to cover her bills. That’s not going to happen here. I expect she’ll start looking elsewhere.”
“And if she doesn’t?”
“If she doesn’t you can beat her up.”
Ivy smiled as she wiggled on her chair. “My day is looking up.”
Jack gave her hand another squeeze before releasing it. “My life is looking up.”
“Are you just saying that because we’re going fishing tomorrow and you never thought it would happen?”
“I’m saying it because I fell in love with the most wonderful woman in the world and I never thought it would happen,” Jack corrected. “You’ve made my life so much better, honey, that I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to thank you.”
“That was really sweet.”
“Thank you.”
“And mushy.”
“I have a gift.”
Ivy offered up a pretty smile. “I know one way you can thank me.”
Jack didn’t bother hiding his smirk. “I’m betting it involves a massage.”
“Yup.”
“I can live with that.”
“I think we both can.” Ivy dug into her pasta. “By the way, I knew you were coming today. That’s one of the reasons I wasn’t afraid. I felt you, too.”
“That’s still weird to me, but I’m starting to like it.”
“Me, too.”
“I guess that’s why we’re perfect together.”
“Forever and always.”
“Forever and always indeed,” Jack agreed. “Now, let’s see how good this pasta is. I’m especially excited because it doesn’t have feet mushrooms in it.”
“Laugh it up. Morel season is only a few weeks away.”
“I thought you loved me.”
Ivy’s face was blank. “I do.”
“You don’t threaten the person you love with feet mushrooms.”
“Morels are a delicacy.”
“If you say so.”
“I’m going to prove it to you this year.”
Jack involuntarily shuddered … and then smiled. “I’m terrified just thinking about it.”
“We’ll get through it together.”
“That’s how we’ll get through everything from here on out. Together.”
