Jack spoke up, “Luke’s right. All armies need a safe base, and a source of food and medicine, and we need to create that safe zone before we can defeat this enemy. That’s always been our plan, and we can’t lose sight of it now.”

Jack and Luke stood side by side, fierce and strong, and together they inspired confidence and devotion among the assembled men and women. Carter stood and cleared his throat dramatically. “Well, Luke, for a boy who uses some purty fancy words yer a decent fella. Ya make a lot of sense. Just don’t let it go to yer head or ya might end up like ole Jack there.”

A few chuckles echoed around the room. Jack opened his mouth to speak just as Maddy Johnson burst in shouting, “Sir, you need to get to the long-range radio—Some guy calling himself President Barnes says he has a message for you! Says he wants to negotiate terms for your surrender to the U.S. government.”

The room fell silent, and all eyes turned to Jack. “President Barnes is it? That traitor is no American. We are the Americans. We’ve fought for our lives, and we’ve fought for our homes and lands, but now it seems we must fight for our nation.” Jack nodded to Maddy, “Tell him you couldn’t find me but you can guarantee I’ll be around in the morning.”

“Yes, sir,” she acknowledged on her way out the door.

Jack smiled. “That bastard hates to be kept waiting.”

“So now what do we do?” Gracie looked from Luke to Jack.

Luke didn’t hesitate to answer for both of them, “Now, we fight The American War.”

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

J.W. Vohs is a former soldier, student, and teacher of history and English. Ever since completing the second book in the Zombie Crusade series, he has spent most of his time split between writing, embarrassing his sons at their various sporting activities, hunting, fishing, and providing limited manual labor in house-flipping ventures with his brothers. He still believes that nature or human error will eventually hit the reset button on mankind, but he plans on enjoying himself until that day arrives. The author lives with his wife and children in northeast Indiana, where, weather permitting, he can be spotted riding his old motorcycle up and down the country roads near his home.
