Ansley laughed. “Well, that’s one way to change the subject.”

Seth’s face remained sober. “May I have this dance?”

  “Out here?”

“There’s music. And the porch is pretty much cleared.” He didn’t wait. He drew her into his arms and they moved to the music, Seth never taking his eyes from hers.

“I don’t think it’s silly at all,” he said, his voice low and husky. “The fact is, if you leave, I’ll come after you and camp on your doorstep every night until you agree to come back here to live with us.”

  “Seth...”

“I know I haven’t always been kind or fair. I know I haven’t treated you the way I should have, but if you’ll have me, we can put all that in the past. Obviously I can’t give you the life of luxury you’re accustomed to. But...”

Tears clogged Ansley’s throat, but she could listen to no more. She reached up and pressed her fingers to his lips. “I don’t need a life of luxury. I don’t need Boston, and I don’t need a man who doesn’t stand up to me. Seth Dobson, I just need you.”

Seth’s lips claimed hers almost before the words had left them. And even in the cold Kansas wind, Ansley had never felt so warm.

The door flew open and the three children, followed by Teddy, rushed onto the porch. “I told you, Lily!” Hannah shouted. “I told you God always answers Christmas prayers.”

Lily planted her hands on her plump little hips. “You didn’t tell me. I told you!”

Seth swung Lily into his arms. “What are you girls talking about?”

“Last night we prayed that Aunt Ansley would stay here and marry you, Uncle Seth.”

Seth shifted Lily to one side and held out his other hand to Ansley. “And God did answer your prayer. As a matter of fact, He answered mine, too.”

Ansley slipped her hand into his and they walked inside together. There were details of her life in Boston she would have to attend to, but for now, she intended to enjoy the first of many Christmases with her family.
