Double Or Nothing: Gemini (Zodiac Alphas) Page 8

We stopped at my car and I popped open the trunk.

  “Maybe next year?” I suggested.

It was funny, but after seeing the twins and having so much fun with them, Badger didn't seem like such a bad little town. In fact, it was so much more appealing than it ever had been. For the first time, I was looking forward to coming back sooner rather than later.

“We'd love that,” Mom said, pulling me in for a hug.

That's the plan then, I thought. I'll come back in exactly a year. That will put me in Badger right in time for the twin's twenty-sixth birthday. If it's anything like their twenty-fifth, then I most definitely don't want to miss out on it.

We said our goodbyes and I exchanged a hug with both of them. My mom held onto me for just a second longer than my dad. It was like she didn't want to let me go.

“Mom, I promise I'll be back in a year,” I said. “I'm dead serious. I swear. You can mark it on your calendar.”

She pulled away and used her tissue to wipe the tears from her cheeks. “I'll be counting down the days.”

“Me too,” I said. “I'll call you guys when I get back to California.”

“Okay, honey,” Dad said. “You drive safe.”

I hopped in my car and pulled down the driveway. When I glanced in my rearview mirror, I saw my parents standing there, watching me drive away. It reminded me of the last time I'd left home. It was almost identical, really. My mom standing there crying and my dad waving goodbye. Something was a little different, though. It was how I felt. This time, I was leaving there with every intention of returning in exactly one year.

As soon as I left my parent's house, I drove toward Main Street. I made my way slowly down the road, soaking up the sights of downtown. When I passed the Mini Mart, I smiled. It immediately reminded me of the twins, and I could have sworn I felt my uterus clench in my belly. Almost as if my microscopic baby had already kicked.

“See you soon, boys,” I said, smiling as I passed the store.

I couldn't wait to come back. The best part, though, wasn't just that I'd get to see my parents and the twins again. It was that, the next time I arrived in Badger, Texas, I'd be bringing something very special with me.

It's going to be so much fun to surprise Mom with her grand baby, I thought. I'll have to figure out which one of the twins is the dad, but I can cross that bridge when the time comes.

As soon as I was at the end of Main Street, I pulled my car down the bumpy road that led away from town. As soon as I was on the highway, I pressed on the gas, pointing my car toward California. I wanted to rush the drive, with the hopes that it would somehow rush the time by and make the next year go faster. I knew it wouldn't work, but still, it was hard to be patient. Especially with so many exciting things happening in my future.
