She had him there. Had him exactly where she wanted him. And the thrum of his strong, steady heartbeat told him that beside her was exactly where he was supposed to be from this day forward.
Sahara peeked through the barely open door and held her breath. It was a scene far too precious to interrupt, with Andy holding a baby while clasping Elizabeth’s hand. Two dear friends had found one another, and she was moved by the emotion that ran so deep and true and intense between them.
But it was the look on Elizabeth’s face that made something flutter inside her. Sahara saw a peace that surpassed human understanding, a will to continue despite the desperation that plagued her only hours ago. A man, and motherhood, had given Elizabeth Kent a renewed purpose, and her smile as she looked toward the cradle was the most compelling thing Sahara had ever witnessed: it was the sign that life should go on, and that giving life was the highest cause that any of them could aspire to.
Easing the door shut, Sahara stood there a moment to consider the misgivings she’d experienced earlier, when Dan seemed so taken by the baby in Roxanne’s arms. Something had her walking slowly, purposefully, to the parlor where he sat chatting with Charlie Oswald. She reached out her hand, willing it not to tremble as she gazed at her tawny, handsome husband.
Dan grasped her strong, slender fingers and knew in a heartbeat that she’d crossed a threshold. Her face was so lovely, framed by golden-red curls, and her smile was that of an angel, serene and silent, beckoning him to follow.
Without letting go of her, he stood up and smiled at Oswald. “Excuse us,” he said in a voice that was thick with longing, “but I think Sahara’s about to lead me into our grandest adventure yet.”
