But what really caught my eye was the horizon. Or rather, where the horizon would be if it wasn’t blocked by the row of magnificent volcanoes. Even from a massive distance, the volcanoes seemed to soar as if reaching for space itself, and slow red rivers of lava were clearly visible running down the sides of some of them.
One of them was like a firework, constantly shooting up flaming ball after flaming ball. Considering how far away we were, each of those flaming balls must have been the size of a school bus.
“Come on,” Rethryn drawled.
“Sorry.” I’d stopped, and Rethryn had been yanking at my arm to continue. Everything was just so different. I’d been worried that I would hate the planet, that it would just be too hot, too gray and too boring. But even after just a minute or so, I could tell there was more to it than that.
And Rethryn’s mention of hot springs certainly helped too.
“Rethryn!” called a voice from up ahead of us.
Rethryn let out a low snort, inaudible to the figure hurrying toward us. I couldn’t quite tell if it was one of happiness or annoyance.
“Naddo,” said Rethryn with a curt nod.
The figure who arrived before us was a plain white Drakon, with no patterning to his skin and scales.
“Made it back, huh? I’m surprised that old rust bucket didn’t disintegrate on you.” He gestured toward the ship we’d just left.
“It served its purpose well enough.” It was the nicest thing I’d heard Rethryn say about the ship. It was almost like he was defensive of it now. “How is Thirren?”
Naddo crouched down and patted the ground beneath him. “I’ve been looking after her, don’t you worry.”
Rethryn rolled his eyes and growled, not amused by his colleague’s humor.
“Got yourself a slave, did you?” Naddo stepped toward me and pointedly looked me over from top to bottom.
“Not bad. Not bad at all. Your betrothed will be pleased.” Naddo paused and looked me over again. “Well actually, maybe not. This one’s a little too pretty. If you would like, I could take her off your hands?”
Rethryn responded by stepping in close to Naddo, his voice low and fierce. “This is my betrothed now. A warrior finds his own mate. I won her body in battle, and her heart and mind in bed.”
I coughed and spluttered. That wasn’t exactly how I remembered things going down. The two Drakon ignored my surprised choking.
“Is that so? Well your former betrothed is going to be mad. Good luck with that.”
“Thank you,” Rethryn said, not realizing that Naddo’s good luck was more teasing than heartfelt encouragement.
“Goodbye Naddo, it was pleasant seeing you again.”
With an amused look on his face, Naddo waved at us as we continued onward.
“You won my heart and mind in bed, huh?” I said when we were out of earshot, poking him in the chest with a finger.
“I did. And now it’s time to see if I won the race to save Thirren. Come.”
And so, arm in arm with my Prince Occasionally-Charming, I began the next chapter of my new life, as the mate of a Drakon warlord, captain and prince.
I knew one thing for sure. Things certainly weren’t going to be dull — on this planet or in bed.
