Kiss and Make Up (Bachelors of Buttermilk #3) Page 19

He still couldn’t believe this whirlwind week that ended with him and Caitlin exchanging wedding vows. He smiled, thinking back to a few days ago when he witnessed Mary reunite with her love. Seeing his grandmother blow a kiss up to the balcony was a magical moment he’d never forget as long as he lived.

Over the next couple of days, he and Caitlin had obtained their marriage license and repeated their vows atop Buttermilk Ladder with the crystal blue lake as a breathtaking backdrop. It was the place his bride admitted to him she’d envisioned they’d marry when she tried on her wedding dress for the first time.

They’d been celebrating all afternoon at their reception at the Lakeside Inn when Brandon had gotten this zany idea that they needed to try using the blue spoon. Buzzed on champagne, Emma and Abby had agreed. So here they were.

“Why do we have to do anything?” Jason asked, coming up beside Emma and rubbing her shoulders. “Let’s just take the box and spoon back to the attic and leave it there for some crazy teenagers to find a hundred years from now.”

Brandon shook his head at that suggestion. “Veto, my friend. I have big plans for my ghostless attic. You are not taking that spoon back.”

“I’ll protect you, baby.” Abby leaned over the counter and Brandon did as well until their lips met.

Josh rolled his eyes. “Get a room.”

Adam set his beer down on the counter. They’d brought in a case and a couple bottles of champagne for this baking adventure. “Don’t we need a single girl to do this on?”

Caitlin nodded. “He has a point.”

“I can take care of that.” Abby bolted from behind the counter and rushed out of the bakery. A few minutes later she returned, pulling Bethany Wilson in. “Here’s our victim. I mean bachelorette,” she said, correcting herself. “Josh, get to work.”

Bethany said hellos to everyone. She’d obviously been in the middle of getting her long brown hair highlighted at the Spring Curls salon next door, evident from the black smock around her neck and silver foils in her hair. “I’m so embarrassed, but I am kind of curious. Look at all of you in love. Maybe there’s hope for me.”

“Why don’t you have a seat?” Brandon pulled out a stool for her. “It’s really fast. I was shocked at my outcome.”

Abby shot her husband a look.

“But it was the best night of my life.” Brandon pulled Abby in for a hug.

  “Nice recovery.” Abby laughed.

“Okay, let’s do this.” Josh headed behind the counter. He and Caitlin had a honeymoon that needed to start pronto, and since Emma wasn’t really excited to do the spell and Abby could never fully pull it off, it was time to see what magic he could perform.

“Okay, dear cousin, here’s the spell.” Emma whispered it in his ear.

Nodding, Josh rolled up his sleeves. “Got it.”

Emma opened the blue box and handed him the blue spoon. “Repeat it in your head concentrating on Bethany’s name.”

He took a deep breath. If this worked, maybe he could work part time at the bakery, offering a Batter Up night on Tuesday evenings just for bachelorettes. He’d need to do something since he’d be moving home, although he wasn’t sure going from perfume chemist to love predictor was exactly his calling.

Could he even perform the spell? Time to find out. He pushed the blue spoon into the batter, tingles shooting up his arm.

Closing his eyes, he repeated the words in his head. Two minutes later, he peered in. “Wow,” he said flatly. Not what he’d expected—not by a longshot. Tilting the bowl, he invited Emma and Abby to take a look.

Emma’s hand flew to her mouth.

“Of course.” Abby threw her hands up in the air.

“Oh, no. Whose name did it spell?” Bethany asked, her face full of panic. “Do I want to know? Please tell me it’s not Evan the botanist.”

“We’re going to have to try again.” Josh handed the spoon to Adam, who had pulled up a stool next to Bethany.

“What am I supposed to do with this?” his best friend asked, licking the batter. “Yummy.” He held the spoon in the air. “I didn’t just curse myself, did I?”

Josh could only smile. Man, Adam had no idea what he was in for, but it was, no doubt, going to turn this town upside down, and just in time for the holidays.

Josh tilted the bowl so everyone could see the words written in blue cursive handwriting on top of the batter.

Give Adam the spoon. XX, Mary
