Loretta had a few more items to pick up for the Breezy Point party and ran upstairs to change her clothes.
Uncle Ichabod had offered to go with her and Loretta could see him through the front screen door as he waited for her out on the front porch.
She darted down the stairs and made her way out onto the porch. “Ready to go?” They started to head to the van parked out back when Loretta caught a glimpse of Lacy, running down the sidewalk in her high heels, her dark hair streaming behind her.
Lacy and running were two words Loretta never used in the same sentence and she wondered what in the world Lacy was running from.
She didn’t stop running until she reached the front porch. “Lord have mercy! Ernie Sapp has risen from the dead! He nearly hit me with that creepy old hearse.”
Moments later, Ernie’s hearse came barreling down Main Street like a bat out of hades and raced by their house. At least it looked like Ernie’s hearse. Loretta could swear she caught a glimpse of spinner rims and heard the sound of hip-hop music blaring through the closed windows.
“It sure looks like his hearse,” Loretta remarked.
Uncle Ichabod shoved his hands in his front pockets and shook his head. “I thought that might’ve been junior sitting in the front row of the church during the funeral. Looks like Ernie’s long-lost son is going to take over where Ernie left off.”
