“I don’t have a clue, Jerry, but I’m thinking several thousand feet above what was programmed,” Ensign Johnson shrugged. “But man, were we lucky it did.”
“You ain’t shitting, Bill.”
“Jimenez is about to come unglued. I think the sooner you get on the radio with him and calm him down, the better off he’ll be. He’s totally alone out there for now. Well, he’s got Tim’s daughter with him, but apparently she’s been badly hurt and is still not able to do much. Apparently, Tim told him to launch a missile if things went totally to shit, and he did. He had no idea we were out here, and he’s devastated that he almost vaporized us,” Johnson said.
“What do we do?” the sub lieutenant asked.
“I think Jerry is the one to ask,” Johnson said. “I’ve just got a ship to run now.”
“Me?”
“Yeah, you, Jerry. It’s all in your hands now. I think it’s what Tim would have wanted.”
“I don’t know about that, Bill, I—”
“Hey!” shouted one of the men guarding the prisoners. “One of these dead guys just moaned! I don’t think they’re all dead!”
