Aubrey's Brief Lives Page 62

by John Aubrey

  PORTRAITS IN MINIATURE AND OTHER ESSAYS BY LYTTON STRACHEY. LONDON. Chatto & Windus. 1931. (8vo: 218 pp.) contains a most accomplished appreciation of the charm of the Brief Lives.

  The Catalogue of Aubrey’s Library, which is now in the Bodleian Library, was compiled by R. T. Gunther and appeared in the BODLEIAN QUARTERLY RECORD VI, No. 69. 1931.

  The best short appreciation of Aubrey’s personality is contained in Christopher Hobhouse’s delightful article JOHN AUBREY (1626–1697), which appeared at pp. 29–34 of CAMEO. A BEDSIDE BOOK. No. 5. (1939.)

  A broadcast talk in commemoration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of John Aubrey’s death, given in the Third Programme of the B.B.C. by Oliver Lawson Dick, was reprinted at pp. 904–5 of THE LISTENER, NOVEMBER 20, 1947. Vol. XXXVIII. No. 982.

  INDEX

  * * *

  The page references in this index correspond to the printed edition from which this ebook was created. To find a specific word or phrase from the index, please use the search feature of your ebook reader.

  THE SPELLING OF the names in this Index is not always identical with that in the text; the nearest approximation to Aubrey’s many variations has been given.

  The names in capital letters are included in the Glossary of Persons: the correct spelling of these names is given in brackets. The page numbers in heavy type refer to the Lives proper.

  Aubrey’s habit of numbering peers by their Christian names has been corrected. For instance, Philip (2nd), Earl of Pembroke, means that this was the second Philip to be Earl of Pembroke, not that Philip was the second Earl of Pembroke.

  Bishops are listed under their surnames, Peers under their titles, and Queens under their Christian names. Unless wives are specifically mentioned by name, they are not listed separately from their husbands. Books are included under their authors.

  Biblical and mythical characters are not included in this Index; nor are the publishers of Aubrey’s works, as they are all concentrated in the Bibliography.
