“I knew you were up to something,” she said.
“Not surprised. Those instincts you’ve picked up. But you didn’t know what I was planning, huh?” said Jack. “I’m still one step ahead of you – just.”
“You watch out, Jack Brennan – I’m gaining on you!”
She gave him another hug, then turned as Chloe handed her the puppy.
“Mum, isn’t he gorgeous?”
“What a sweetie,” said Sarah, cradling the young spaniel. Then she turned to Jack: “Has he got a name?”
“Not yet,” said Jack. “I figured we’d party on a little longer – come up with a name together.”
“So it’s a ‘not leaving’ party,” said Sarah, handing the puppy over to Daniel who joined the others sitting at the table.
“I like that,” said Jack. “A ‘not leaving’ party.”
He watched Sarah pick up her glass of champagne and hand him his own.
“To not leaving,” she said, smiling.
He clinked glasses – and smiled back.
“Yes – here’s to staying in Cherringham!”
