“Okay, I’ll be back in an hour. We can set-up the next test then.”
Halfway across the lab, Joe stopped as a ten-year-old girl stood in his entranceway. Her short, auburn hair contrasted against her light-green eyes, her mother’s eyes. Joe smiled.
“Emma, why aren’t you in class?” Joe asked taking the girl by her hand. “You know you are not allowed out of the children’s wing.”
“I know, but I’m so lonely, there.” Emma wrapped her arms around Joe’s legs. “Plus, I was with Grandpa.”
Joe knelt beside Emma. “Do you know what’s today?”
Emma smiled. “It’s Mommy’s birthday, Daddy.”
He hugged his daughter. “Yes, you’re right.”
“Can we visit her, today?”
Joe sighed feeling heaviness in his chest. “Let me take you back to your area. After my meeting with Grandpa, I’ll come to get you, and we will go visit Mommy.”
Emma kissed Joe’s cheek. “I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you too, my little Emma.”
Joe stood and held Emma’s hand exiting his lab. As they approached a translucent door, Joe pressed his left hand flat against a small, glass panel on the wall. A red light scanned his palm turning green as the door opened.
Joe and Emma stepped inside as Emma placed her hand on the glass panel beside the door on the wall. Red letters scrolled across the top of the panel. Emmanuel Bishop. Emma recorded her attendance.
The children’s wing can accommodate up to one-hundred children younger than thirteen for classes during the day. Emma hugged Joe and joined the thirty-two others, who were left remaining.
“I’ll be back in about an hour. I love you.”
“Love you, too, Daddy.”
The translucent door swished closed as Joe exited. The notes in his hand shuffled as he fumbled the folder. Joe stopped and reviewed his last handwritten comments. The top sheet inside listed the latest numbers of sick children.
Three more this week… So far, Emma seems healthy, but she’s not been sick a day in her life… What’s causing this?
Joe stacked his notes neatly together inside the folder and exited the children’s wing. His feet fell firm against the floor walking on the magnetic floor following the way to the Leader’s wing located in Salvation Station One. Masterpieces of artwork adorned the hallway from the Mona Lisa to a plethora of works by Monet.
Joe stopped in front a translucent door pausing before placing his hand on the glass panel to gain entry.
Emma wants to visit you, today. Joe held his hand against his chest. Happy Birthday, Sweetie. I love you. He rubbed a blue and white diamond pendant affixed to a golden necklace under his bio-suit, while gazing at the Waterlilies painting on the wall. Mary, I miss you.
