It was that that finally swept away her doubts; the knowledge that he was trying, for her sake, to exercise control, that emotionally he was as vulnerable and apprehensive as she was herself. She could see it in his eyes as they looked down into her own, feel it in the fine tremor of his hands as he held her, the unsteady thud of his heart.

‘I want to go home with you,’ she told him shyly. ‘To… I want to be with you…’

‘If I take you back with me now there’s no way I’ll be able to stop myself from wanting you to share my bed,’ Gideon warned her.

‘Perhaps that’s what we should do,’ Courage told him gravely. ‘Wipe out the bad memories with new ones.’

‘What are you reading?’ Courage asked Gideon sleepily, as she burrowed closer to the warmth of his body, her mouth curling in a feminine smile of pleasure as she recalled their lovemaking earlier in the evening. She had no doubts now that Gideon loved her. Even if he hadn’t told her so, repeating his words over and over again, she would have known it just from the way he touched her…

‘This,’ Gideon told her, showing her the sheets of paper covered in her own familiar writing. ‘I picked it up at your grandmother’s.’

‘That’s private,’ Courage protested, but she was too happy to feel any real resentment.

‘I don’t deserve this…you…’ Gideon told her heavily. ‘Not after the way I treated you, the way I hurt you…’

‘It’s over,’ Courage reminded him gently. ‘It’s over…’

‘No, it isn’t,’ Gideon corrected her. ‘This is just the beginning. Is your grandmother well enough to spend a few hours away from the recuperative centre, do you think?’

‘Yes, I should imagine so,’ Courage confirmed, frowning slightly. ‘Why?’

‘I thought you’d want her to be there when we get married… And there’s no way I’m waiting until she’s discharged. You will marry me, won’t you, Courage?’ he asked her, suddenly heartachingly unsure of himself.

In answer Courage sat up in bed beside him, wrapping her arms around him, her breasts pressed against the warmth of his chest as she kissed him teasingly on the mouth, punctuating her kisses with laughter. ‘Yes.’

He had hurt her badly—cruelly. But, loving him as much as she did, she could well understand how his own emotions had driven him to such extremes, and more importantly she knew that he was not by nature either vindictive or cruel, and that she need have no fear that such behaviour would ever recur.

‘Do you think you’ll ever really be able to forgive me?’ he asked her quietly now, almost as though he had read her mind.

‘I might,’ Courage responded, the look in her eyes belying the laughter in her voice. ‘Especially if you kiss me…

‘Gideon… Gideon…what are you doing?’ she protested huskily, as he reached out and snapped off the bedside light and then lowered her back against the bed.

‘Kissing you—what else?’ came his muffled response as he cupped her face and covered her mouth with his own. ‘Isn’t that what you wanted…?’

  ‘Mmm… Mmm…’ was Courage’s only response.
