We made it to the galley, sat down, and noticed that there was no flatware or menus on either of the two tables within the galley due to the storm. On top of that, the waiter said that the only thing being served tonight was cold meat sandwiches, turkey, or ham. There were no cheeseburgers or steaks on the menu this evening due to the rough seas. Therefore, the four of us ordered four hot roasted turkey sandwiches, four cokes, and in what seemed to be merely minutes the waiter arrived with our order. The sandwiches had the works on them, and resembled a Subway sandwich.
The four of us ate whole-heartedly until the four of us had our fill, then chatted away until Elizabeth said, “I think it is time that we turn in for the night and try our best to get some sleep. I know it will not be easy due to the rough seas tonight, so do your best.”
Lyle replied, “Elizabeth, I just hope I can keep down the turkey sandwich through the night.”
The four of us laughed as we stood up from the table and carefully made our way back to our rooms, as the ship seemed to be moving more violently back and forth as it made its way through the enormous swells. I kept wondering how in the hell the four of us managed not to get seasick, especially on full stomachs. One good thing is that the Elizabeth Dane seemed to be faring very well in the storm, considering the fact that the swells were now reaching twenty feet high, at least that is what the captain had said over the intercom.
Once inside our room I grabbed the remote control and turned the TV on. I hoped that whatever was on would keep our minds off the rough seas that were making the ship go up and down, and rock side to side. Elizabeth changed into her bedclothes for the night and then laid down on the bed, and in what seemed to be only minutes of her laying down she drifted off to sleep. It was not much later that I too drifted off to sleep. I do not know how the two of us managed to fall asleep with the ship moving up and down, and from side to side so violently, but we did.
I awakened to Elizabeth calling out my name.
“Mason, get your ass up out of bed. The ocean swells are almost coming up to the port hole.”
I replied, “Nonsense Elizabeth, there is no way in hell that the swells are almost reaching the porthole in our room. It cannot be true. This room is at least thirty feet above the water line of the ship.”
Sure enough, when I went over and looked through the glass porthole, wham! A monster swell rolled by the side of the ship.
“It is a good thing that these portholes are water tight Elizabeth, or there would be sea water in our room. I thought that you were pulling my leg at first.”
“I would never lie to you about anything Mason. What in god’s name are you thinking?”
“I know that Elizabeth. I just thought that you were pulling my leg. You know, kidding around for a laugh.”
“Ha, ha, very funny Mason, not this time. I had hoped that we would have made it through the tropical storm by morning. However, the weather has got much worse. Have you not felt the ship rocking from side to side, and going up and down the enormous swells? It seems as if we have entered into a pretty nasty storm that is going to last a while.”
“Well, I noticed it last night, right before I drifted off to sleep. I had not felt a thing until you woke me up this morning to look out the porthole.”
I was frozen with fear, as I thought that I was having Déjà vu. On our voyage to Devil’s Island we encountered a storm, and now on our way back to England we have, once again encountered some really rough weather at sea, a tropical storm no doubt.
“Elizabeth, you are up early this morning. How long have you been up?”
“Not too long before waking you. I got up early to go have a talk with the captain about the rough weather, and when he thought we would arrive in England.”
“Is it good news?”
Elizabeth smiled and said, “The captain told me that the Elizabeth Dane should have arrived and docked at Cut Throat Harbor in England by mid-afternoon today. However, the storm has slowed the ship down, and we will not make it there by mid-afternoon today.”
“What do you mean slowed the ship down?”
“That is what the captain had told me this morning, and all I know.”
“Well, I guess it is possible that the enormous swells being formed by the wind could have altered the ships course and slowed us down.”
“Well Elizabeth that is not very good news to hear. I
wonder how far behind we are since the weather started getting really bad last night?”
After I got dressed and brushed my teeth, Elizabeth and I decided to go down to the galley. When we got to the galley we ordered two hot teas, and the conversation drifted back and forth from one thing to another until Lyle and Hillary finally arrived. Once they sat down at the table Elizabeth told them what the captain had told her earlier this morning about the ship being slowed down by the tropical storm. Lyle and Hillary looked at Elizabeth with disbelief when Lyle asked, “Elizabeth, are you quite sure the ship is not going to arrive in England by mid-afternoon today?”
“I am quite sure of it Lyle. However, we will get there by nightfall. The captain has reassured me of that.”
Another lunch had passed on the ship and evening was almost here when I finally, after what seemed to be an eternity, heard the ships loud speaker come to life and the captain’s voice say, “All passengers departing for Cut Throat Harbor please report to the upper deck.”
I had not heard anything so exciting in my life. I was exhilarated that our ocean voyage was almost over, and our destination back to England had finally ended.
The ship docked and the four of us were off the ship with our luggage in tow, waiting for a taxi to take us back to Darkness Falls Motel, where Elizabeth’s Jeep was parked in the parking lot. Within twenty minutes of Elizabeth’s phone call, a taxi pulled up in front of us. The driver got out and helped load our luggage and we were off to be dropped off in the parking lot of Darkness Falls Motel. We arrived in the parking lot in what seemed to be just minutes of us getting into the taxi, got out, unloaded our belongings, packed them up into Elizabeth’s Jeep, and the four of us were on our way back to the Manor.
Once we had arrived, Elizabeth parked the Jeep close to the front door so it would be easier for Lyle and I to unload our belongings. The four of us stopped and put our belongings on the front porch and just looked at one another in disbelief, knowing that we had somehow managed to make it through the nightmarish ordeal, and then walked through the front door. Once inside we unpacked our things and started to clean up the place as if nothing ever happened.

THE
FINAL CHAPTER
W
ithin a few weeks back in England Elizabeth had everything within the Manor that was damaged or completely destroyed by the evil forces that once occupied the Blackwood Manor thrown out and replaced with new, leaving no signs of the evil that we had encountered. Everything was going flawlessly. Even the sky was filled with sunshine instead of clouds, which was somewhat weird for England. The days were extremely busy and passing by fast, giving the notion that we were all enjoying the time that the four of us were spending together, now that the evil forces that had once consumed the Blackwood Manor was gone. It could not have been a month since the four of us returned when Elizabeth had walked over to me with the most mischievous look on her face and revealed that she was pregnant with my child. I could not ask for anything else in my life, my destiny had been fulfilled, I got the woman of my dreams, and to top it all off a child on the way. It was picture perfect, almost too perfect in fact. I stopped myself right there before I let my mind get the better of me and said to myself, Mason, this is how a perfect life should be, stop the paranoia.
As I said before, time seemed to be flying by, as before I knew it the wedding day had finally arrived. Elizabeth had created the most luxurious wedding for the two of us, just like she told me she would. Everyone that was close to Elizabeth was there, she even flew in the Nickels from Devil’s Island. It was so perfect that I co
uld have sworn that I was living in a fairy tale. Elizabeth had set it up so the two of us would be married on a couple of white horses that had long flowing manes and tails. It was odd, very odd indeed, as the day was once again filled with blue skies and an abundance of sunshine, which was unheard of for England to have so many sunny days in a row. Nevertheless, it seemed as if, ever since we returned to the Blackwood Manor that is all I have seen, blue skies and an abundance of sunshine.
Elizabeth and I got onto the magnificent horses and started our way towards where we were to be married by the officiant. She had already made her way over in front of the officiant, patiently waiting for me, but the stubborn horse that I was on seemed to have another agenda, or was extremely nervous about something that I was unaware of and did not want to go where I was leading it to go. I could not help but wonder why this was happening right now since everything else had been flawless ever since the four of us had arrived back in England, as if I was living in a fairytale. In fact, up until now everything had worked out the way that I imagined it would. I finally got the horse to move, but as I got into position in front of the officiant and alongside Elizabeth and the horse that she was on, the horse that I was on reared up on two legs and fell backwards on top of me, and everything went black.
The next thing that I knew, I was hearing a couple of very faint voices that I could not make out, and still could not see anything but pitch black. It was as if I was blind and could not see, left with just my hearing, which seemed to be impaired as well. Then suddenly, the voices that I was hearing were becoming clearer and more distinctive and started to sound very familiar, almost like my foster parents, Alexander and Charlotte Kingsley. I thought to myself this cannot be, they are both dead. I saw them with my own two eyes, lifeless, sitting at the kitchen table before the house caught fire. I started seeing a faint light, which got brighter and brighter as my eyes gained focus. Once in focus I could not believe what I was seeing, although I wished it could be true. I saw Alexander and Charlotte beside me saying, “Mason, can you hear us, are you alright?”
“Yes I can hear you, but I do not understand how the two of you can be talking to me right now, the both of you are dead.”
“Nonsense Mason, what are you talking about? We are right here, with you in the hospital.”
“What do you mean you are with me in the hospital?”
“Mason, you have been unconscious for thirteen days now, and we thought that you were never going to regain consciousness.”
“How did I end up in the hospital?”
“Well, a couple of hikers found you unconscious out on a trail in the forest and called nine-one-one. You were picked up and taken by ambulance to the hospital. I have to say Mason, your dad and I were worried sick since you never came home, and on top of that we had no clue where you were, or where to start looking for you. It was not until later on that evening that we had received a phone call from the hospital saying that you had been in an accident, and you have been here ever since.”
“Are you sure I am not just dead and dreaming this? Is any of this real?”
“Yes Mason, just relax. Everything is alright now.”
“Will someone pinch me really hard, so I will know for sure that I am not just dreaming all this? Lord this is a nightmare.”
“Mason, are you sure?”
“Yes I am sure, one of you do it right now!”
“Ok, I am going to pinch you really hard...here I go.”
“Ouch that hurt! I guess I am not dreaming all this. In that case, I must have been dreaming what I thought to be reality up until now. Wow! If that is the case, have I got a story to tell the both of you.”
