  Chapter 13

Jane couldn’t believe what she was thinking, what her Superintendent had suggested. Jane had no idea what to do she suspected all of them including her Superintendent; they all could have their reasons for helping Thaddeus. It all made sense now from Thaddeus gaining Jane’s phone number and extension code, to learning where she lived, the taser everything. Jane didn’t know whom she could trust but she needed her team to still be able to work this case.

  “Jane what is going on?”

“Some evidence has led us to believe that we have an inside man. Someone in this station that is helping Thaddeus. And I don’t know whom. I need time to think time to breathe. Let’s go home. Were discuss all new details in the morning before heading to the new crime scene. Get some rest I’ll see you all here at seven.”

With that Jane walked out of the station before any of them could stop her to ask more questions. Thankfully Perry had followed her cue and trailed after her to his car.

“Jane we need to talk about this. I hope you don’t think it’s me?”

“We do need to talk Perry but not here. Where are we staying tonight?”

“I thought we could stay back at my apartment tonight if that’s ok?”

  “Yeah let’s go.”

Jane and Perry drove in silence the tension flaring between the two of them. Jane was beginning to get nervous and flustered knowing that there was probably going to be some confrontation between the pair of them. For the past seven months or more they had been running on pure chemistry, the sex was out of this world. And now they were about to approach their first issue as a couple and Jane couldn’t comprehend how that was going to go. She had a load of questions to ask Perry and a load of information in her head that she couldn’t make sense of. Jane was going into sensory overload on top of everything to do with Thaddeus. Jane did not want tension and doubt brewing between her and Perry, or herself and her team. Once Perry had parked the car within his gated drive he took Jane by the hand and led her into his apartment to his couch.

“Ok Jane just breathe. I can hear the cogs turning in your head and your brain going into overload so just relax. I want you to start at the beginning every single doubt, issue or fear that you have about me I want to know. So I’m not going to say anything I am just going to sit here and listen and when you’re done I’ll try to answer any questions and put any issues to rest that you may have ok. Don’t worry about making me angry or upsetting me it’s not going to be an issue. So when you’re ready go.”

“You are a bigger player in this area than what I ever realised. You know too many people and have too much influence over those people still to just have been a drug dealer. I was naive to keep that belief for this long. Does Frank know how high up the chain you go?”

“No he doesn’t I am a silent boss I always have been it’s how I have always operated. I still get seen as a low drug dealer and no one ever looks to closely. It keeps me and my son in less danger if none of my business enemies know who is at the top.”

“Smart move I suppose so how much of the boss are you still?”

“Not at all I handed over the reigns to my right hand man he has become the silent boss. He knew what role for the police I was going to be taking and we were hoping to use my position to get rid of some of the more low lives in the business. We don’t just sell drugs parts of the company are becoming legitimate and legal were slowly moving the company forward but in your eyes the money that built us come on the back of other peoples addiction.”

“Ok so you are going to be using the police force, the police force I work for and love to take out people in the drug world that you don’t like, so you can legitimise your company?”

“Yeah I know it’s hard to believe but I told you from the beginning I want out of the game. And I do want to talk to young kids about not getting into the wrong path but I did fall into it so I have to use the business skills that I got from it to make my life. My idea was to sell out the people to Frank that I didn’t want and within the year my business will be able to go completely drug free and be legitimate.”

“Ok so does Frank know that that is the plan?”

“He knows I have a specific list of people that I am willing to give him and that is it. As far as he is concerned the rest of the names and people I know I wont sell out for my safety.”

“Ok this is a lot to take in and is different to what I was expecting to hear.”

“I know Jane and I am asking a lot from you to trust me. But I honestly am trying to change my life so I can be good for you. You have to believe me I have nothing to do with helping Thaddeus.”

“That is one thing I do know and believe Perry. My fear is that with all your associates and ties looking for Thaddeus that you are going to get to him first and that Thaddeus will not be walking away from that. And I don’t know how with me being on this side of the law how I am meant to feel about that.”

“I’m just glad you believe I’m not the one helping Thaddeus. The other part is a little more complicated. There is no way that it can be linked back to me. If any of the people that I know find Thaddeus and kill him then good. I won’t be shedding any tears about it he will have been eliminated and the threat against you will be over. I will be by your side helping you and your team the best I can to catch Thaddeus in a legal fashion. If we manage to get him locked away again good I can live with that. All I want is you safe Jane.”

“Ok I don’t like it but I wont ask you to change it. Now it just leaves us with the question to beg who has been helping Thaddeus?”

“Look I understand that your not going to like it but your right there is no point asking me to change it because I wont. Keeping you safe is my main priority. But I can say if anything does happen to Thaddeus I have nothing to do with it. I can also assure you that I am not in the business of killing people I never have. Being all honest I may have taken a few fingers and toes from money owed but that is it. Now this is going to be something else you’re not going to like hearing but I have to ask. Has there been any more help to Thaddeus since Jack died?”

“Not that I know of but your right I certainly don’t like what your insinuating with that question.”

“I know but I don’t like the thought of it being anyone on your team. But if it was Jack at least Thaddeus help is over. I mean think about it Jack could of easily given Thaddeus your work line number and your address. He could of taken the taser from the station and when you went out to your apartment and he went off to meet with the bomb squad he could of snuck of to give the taser to Thaddeus, and then Thaddeus turned on him. Killed Jack to cover up the fact that he was helping him. It’s just a theory but I can’t think of a way to prove it.”

Jane and Perry sat in silence both having heard and said a lot. Jane was trying to come to terms with everything that she had learnt. Jane could accept whom Perry was she had done that from when they first met. And Jane believed Perry when he said he was trying to turn his life into something good. She perhaps didn’t like the way he was going about it but she could live with it. And as much as Jane hated to admit it his theory about Jack helping Thaddeus did make sense. Jane didn’t like thinking badly of Jack but at least like Perry said the good in it means that the help for Thaddeus has stopped.

Jane started to form an action plan in her head as to how she could prove Perry’s theory. First thing tomorrow when she gets to the station Jane decided that she would ring through to their phone provider and get her line and extension code changed but she would leave the trap and trace in place. The only personnel that would learn the new number would be her Superintendent and the rest of the members of her team. If Thaddeus manages to ring through to her personal line again they would learn that Jack wasn’t the one helping Thaddeus. And that they still had a spy within their mix. Jane hadn’t realised how long she had been silent for and she could see the concern growing on Perry’s face. The thought hitting him that he had lost her.

  “Jane are we g
oing to be ok?”

“Were going to be fine Perry. I just want all this over with like you. Come on I’m starving lets get something to eat. I’m ready for a kip already.”

“Come on then I have got some pasta and a bottle of wine that we can have.”

The time passed in a blur of eating, drinking, talking and laughing. Jane had been beginning to forget how carefree time with Perry could be. After everything that they were going through they needed this. Perry took Jane by the hand and led her off to his bedroom. Perry took Jane’s face in his hand and continued to stare into Jane’s eyes. Her suspicion was that he was looking for any sign of doubt but Jane had none. She moved closer and locked lips with Perry. The kiss was soft and sensual. Jane completely surrendered her mouth to Perry’s invasion. Perry carefully began to peel Jane from her clothes without removing the presence of his lips from hers. Perry peeled of her bra revealing her ample breasts that felt so good to be free from the enclosure of her bra and nestled so gently into the caress of Perry’s hands. Perry had managed to free all of Jane from her clothes and was steadily loosing his own. When he was finished stripping he picked Jane up with ease and carried her to the side of the bed. He laid her down with great care and stood back to admire Jane in full view. As he came back he took Jane by the legs and spread them so he could nestle closely between them. Taking his prize and time he slowly slid his full erection deep into Jane before checking to see if she was ready. Jane let out a short sharp gasp of shock and Perry stilled himself. Letting Jane’s body readjust to the intrusion of his throbbing member he retook Jane’s mouth with a deep excited kiss. When Jane swivelled her hips to grind against him in the seductive way she knew so well that drove him insane with wanting. He knew she was ready for him to resume the pounding he needed and wanted to give Jane. The panting and the deep breaths soon began to build up as the excitement and pleasure began to overwhelm the both of them each time that Perry drove his erection into Jane. Jane’s body was beginning to clench and spasm as she came to orgasm from each of the movements that Perry made. As Perry was standing at the side of the bed thrusting into her so he could make the best of the view and use the leverage he slowed his thrusts so Jane could ride him with the movements of her own hips through her orgasm. He began to play with her clitoris milking each groan and gasp of pleasure from Jane so he could guide her back over the edge for the second climax. Perry could no longer control himself and continue neglecting his needs. The excitement in the pit of his stomach had begun to bubble over that he needed to pound away into Jane. It was Jane’s turn to milk Perry of all the fluid he was emptying from the depths of his testicles. They collapsed back onto the bed in a pile of satisfaction and contentment and drifted off to sleep.

Jane awoke to the feeling of fulfilment with perhaps a touch of soreness from her misdemeanours and antics with Perry last night. But one thing that Jane did have was a clear head. She had her action plan and a very long list of objectives to accomplish for this case. None of which could be done from the comfort of Perry’s bed.

Jane made it to the station in record time, Perry’s erratic driving probably helped with that, but Jane knew better than to ever insult a mans driving it went hand in hand with his masculinity. She made it to the station before any of the other members of her team had arrived. Jane set to work at calling the stations phone provider and having her desk phone number changed and extension code. That was definitely an easier process than what Jane had been anticipating. Her next step was phoning through to the bomb unit to mobilise them to meet them at what they believed to be a potential crime scene. So that they were on sight ready to dispose of any devices that Thaddeus had wired. While on the phone to the unit chief at the bomb disposal unit he informed Jane that a fax had been sent through to the station pertaining to the potential devices that Thaddeus could have built from his purchases. Jane thanked the man for his help and said if she had any questions pertaining to the information in the fax she would ask him on scene. Jane next rang through to the crime scene investigation unit to prep a team ready to meet them at the next location and informed them that their investigation process would not be able to begin until the bomb unit had cleared the area of any devices. Once Jane had finished her call with them she made her way over to the fax machine and found that she had several waiting. Not only from the bomb disposal unit but also from the lab analysis for evidence found at the tree sight. Perry who had come to the station with Jane and had been watching her work and was beginning to flick through some files to do with Kyle McManus. Just as Jane was beginning to read through the faxes Eric, Ian and Amy walked in closely followed by their Superintendent.

“Ok guys grab a coffee and a chair what ever you need and come take a seat we have a lot to discuss before the day can begin.”

“Yeah tell us about it. It was one hell of a bombshell that you dropped on us before you walked out last night. Care to explain?”

“Unfortunately Ian I’m still not much wiser on that predicament than I was last night. The Superintendent came to me yesterday with information regarding the taser that was used on Jack. It was one that was logged to this station but not checked out by an officer. And I sincerely believe it to be very unlikely that Thaddeus walked in here himself to collect one. Add to that the fact that Thaddeus gained my work extension number and my home address the logical assumption became that someone on the inside has been helping him, I have a working theory that even I still don’t like but I’m not particularly keen on being wrong either. But for now I have changed my work number and will no longer be going back to my address at all. So if Thaddeus ends up with my work phone number again then I can scrap my theory. But for now there is nothing else to discuss on the matter so lets move on.”

“Wait from what your suggesting you think it could have been Jack?”

“I’m sorry Eric I don’t like believing that it could have been Jack. But I don’t like believing that it could be anyone else in this room. At least with this idea it means the help to Thaddeus has stopped and I can trust everyone I am working with in this room. But like I said lets not get caught up on it I know it’s hard but we need to continue working this case. So lets move on.”

“Ok what else have we got to discuss?”

“Well I had some faxes waiting when I arrived this morning so lets discuss the details of those ok? Lab analysis for the evidence found at the tree sight has come back. The blood found at the scene tested positive to belonging to our first victim Helen Moore like we thought. The wear marks to the tree from the rope are consistent with a three-strand natural fibre rope. With the trace of fibres that were left behind proving that it was made of coir. There was also a trace amount of burn off product from the factory at the scene that was consistent with what was found in our victim’s hair. The photo of me that they found nailed to the tree did not gain them any evidence. I also received a fax from the bomb disposal unit regarding the bombs that were found at the body dump crime scene and the purchases that Thaddeus has made. The bombs that we have already discovered were filled with a mixture of nitro-glycerine, sawdust and sodium carbonate. They estimate with the level of quantities put into the bombs found that they would have a blast radius of approximately seven thousand seven hundred metres per second which is basically a five mile radius. They were also filled with metal scraps for shrapnel to increase fatality potentiality with each blast. The purchases of the materials give them the estimation that he would be able to build at least another twenty devices of similar size and capability.”

“Ok well they are definitely capable of packing quite a punch. If one of those were to go off while were in the vicinity the likely hood of survival is quite slim.”

“Yeah I’m beginning to understand that. I have already called the bomb disposal unit to meet us at the new crime scene just in case. Amy, Ian did Hal Walpole provide any useful information?”

“Not really we showed him a picture of Thaddeus and our victim and he said he remembered seeing them talk
ing and getting in a car to leave together. But he stated that the lady never seemed alarmed at any point. Some how Thaddeus talked her into getting into the car quietly and quickly without creating a scene.”

“Ok my guess is he may have stalked her before dropped the names of her kids or husband to scare her. Basically get in the car and come with me, don’t scream, don’t shout and I wont kill who ever.”

“Knowing Thaddeus and the victim herself her family was everything so it’s a sure fire way to get her in the car and away without a scene.”

“Excellent so we know how and where he picked up his victim but what is the action plan then today Detective? As you seem to be so on the ball.”

“Well that depends on whether you are at our disposal to use Sir or do you have other matters to attend to?”

“No I can be at your disposal. What do you need?”

“I would like you to take yourself and Perry to the prison to interrogate Kyle McManus and James York.”

“With all due respect Detective Perry is not a police officer and not even really a part of this team. I cannot willingly take him to the prison to participate in an interrogation procedure it would be unethical.”
