  Chapter 1

The sound of a loud motorcycle engine interrupted the music playing in the car repair bay of the service station. The owner Rob Harris straightened up from his position under the hood of the sports car he was working on to turn and watch as an old-school chopper pulled in to park at the entrance to the shop. He grabbed an almost clean rag from his back pocket and started walking to the front of the shop as the motorcyclist pulled off his gloves and helmet before swinging his leg over with the grace of an experienced rider. He ran a hand through his thick black hair and looked up as Rob walked out to greet him.

“Afternoon. Is there something that I can do for you?” Rob asked as he cleaned his hand on the rag.

“Good afternoon. I’m Tony Perez. I came to apply for the job listed in your window,” Tony said in his deep, gravelly voice. He was tan and slim but very physically fit. As he looked Rob in the eyes, Rob got his first glimpse at his unusual, ice-blue eyes.

“Do you have any experience?” Rob asked, looking curiously at the young man.

“I just got my auto and motorcycle repair certification from the local junior college. I built my own bike from parts I scavenged from the junkyard in my hometown. I’ve done a fair amount of work on cars, but I’ll admit, more on motorcycles. I’m a fast learner and a hard worker, sir. I promise. You won’t be sorry you’ve hired me,” Tony spoke quickly with a devastating white smile.

“You’re not from around here, are you, Tony?” Rob asked, looking past him to his motorcycle with the attached sleeping bag and duffle.

“No, sir. I came here to go to school. I grew up in Lincoln in the next state over,” Tony admitted. His smile faded. “I’ll be honest with you, sir. I left town because the local sheriff was trying to put me away for dating one of his children. He didn’t care for me much. It was better for me to move on,” Tony said simply.

“Oh, he didn’t like you dating his daughter, huh?” Rob said with a chuckle.

“No, sir... his son,” Tony watched him carefully to see if his sexual preference would keep him from getting this job.

Rob looked at him carefully. “I see. I’m Rob Harris, the owner of this service station. Bring your fancy certificates with you and come back to the office. I’ll buy you a soda, and we’ll talk. You may decide that my shop isn’t what you’re looking for, but I need a break anyway, and I could really use some help.” Rob watched as Tony’s generous lips spread into a big grin.

Wow, this young man is stunning, Rob thought to himself. He was going to have to be careful to keep his distance. Tony had to be ten years younger than he was. Rob couldn’t keep his eyes from following Tony’s walk back to his motorcycle, and he tried not to groan as he leaned over to open his duffle to pull out the certificates. Lord, have mercy, Rob kept the conversation going in his brain. That young man had a bottom that he’d see in his dreams for a while.

  Chapter 2

By the time Tony turned around, Rob had schooled his features. He signaled the young man to follow him to the office, and he began walking back. He stopped at the old-fashioned soda machine and said, “It only serves root beer. Is that okay with you?”

“Perfect,” Tony answered. Anything would have tasted great to Tony. He’d been driving around on his bike all day long without a break to eat or drink. He had tried to convince himself that he wasn’t hungry or thirsty, but it wasn’t working. He was almost out of money and needed this job badly.

When the two men had taken their seats in the office, Rob reached a carefully cleaned hand over to take the certificates and look them over. Tony had placed them in plastic sleeves which was smart when dealing with men who made their living grinding grease into their hands and under their nails. Tony had included a copy of his official transcripts for each program, listing the classes and the grades for each. It was obvious that he had worked hard to earn high marks in everything.

  “I’m impressed,
Tony. I’ll be honest with you. I was hoping to hire someone with motorcycle experience. More people are buying a bike for a recreational vehicle, and I get several calls a week asking if I do motorcycle service and repair. Do you think you’re ready to take the lead in working on any motorcycle that comes in for repair?” Rob asked honestly.

“I can promise you that I am good with my hands. I like working on bikes and cars. Bikes, I’ve worked longer on, so I’m more at ease with them. I’m good with cars, too. I just haven’t worked on them since I was a kid,” Tony said confidently.

Rob laughed. “You’re still pretty much a kid, aren’t you?”

“No, sir. I’m twenty-three. I’ve been on my own for a long while. My folks passed away when I was seventeen. I know what it is to work to support yourself, and I don’t shy away from hard work. I’ll be glad to work whatever hours you need me to be here,” Tony said easily. He didn’t know why he was comfortable with the man across the desk—but he wanted to tell him the truth. Tony judged him to be in his late thirties.

“Let me tell you about the job. I can’t offer you a lot of money in the beginning. But if you can build up the motorcycle service while you help me with the car work, I’ll definitely increase your wages on an equivalent scale. I run a clean shop. I tell people the truth about what is wrong with their car, and I charge them an honest fee. I don’t allow my employees to do drugs or drink to excess,” Rob said bluntly.

“I will be glad to work at building a motorcycle repair component for your business, sir,” Tony answered quickly.

“You can call me Rob, Tony. I’ll offer you a weekly amount of $600 a week before taxes. You may need to put in a little more than forty hours a week but no more than fifty. It looks like you might need a place to stay.” Rob paused to see Tony give a confirming nod. “I have an extra room in my home above the shop. If you promise you’re not a serial killer who is planning to murder me in my sleep, it’s yours for as long as you need it. It’s decorated for a little boy, but as long as you don’t mind the décor, it’s a good place to sleep. There’s only one bathroom, so we’ll share that, but you can make yourself at home in the rest of my place.”

“That’s very generous of you. I’d love to have four walls around me again to sleep. I’d wait in line for hours for a private shower. I’ve been using the showers at the public pool. It’s only cold water, and there are usually a few dozen people wandering around.” Tony shook his head ruefully as he thought of how he’d been roughing it lately. “I’d be glad to have you subtract room and board.”

“No, Tony. You’re welcome to the room for free. I’m not much of a cook, but I’d enjoy having someone to talk with at meals. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a guest for dinner. You’ll be doing me a favor, too. You’re keeping me from starting to talk to myself.” Rob laughed. “Alright, it sounds like you’ve got a job. When can you start?”

“Right now, if you’d like,” Tony said enthusiastically.

“I’ll get you some paperwork to fill out for the government’s part of your paycheck. If you need to set up a bank account, I’ll be glad to recommend someone to work with here in town. For your first few checks, I’ll be glad to cash them for you as you get on your feet.” Rob wandered over to the file cabinet and opened the second drawer to search through the carefully labeled folders. “Here it is. Just make sure you fill in all the front side of the sheet. You can list my address if you’d like. It’s written here on this label,” Rob turned a magazine on his desk over to show Tony the label on the back. “I’m going to get back to the engine I’m overhauling. Come on into the shop, and we’ll get you started on a job. You’ll probably want to change into something to work. Do you have your coveralls from school?”

Tony answered, nodding, “I sure do. They’re in my duffle. I’ll grab them and change. Do you have a bathroom in the garage?”

“It’s right through this side door and down the hallway to the left,” Rob said as he turned to walk back into the shop. It looks like I’ve got a good man for my new employee, Rob thought to himself. He’s ready to get to work. Rob smiled as he looked over his shoulder at the younger man filling out the paperwork with great concentration.

  Chapter 3

A short amount of time later, Tony appeared in a baggy pair of coveralls. It looked like he’d bought a couple of sizes larger than he needed. Immediately, Tony joined Rob where he was bent over the engine. The owner had brought it in with an unexplained noise under the hood. The two men worked together well and quickly found and repaired the problem.

It’s great to have another pair of hands and eyes, Rob thought to himself as they finished with that vehicle and Rob moved on to work on the truck in the second bay. While he was working on the brake job, Tony finished the first car and pulled it out of the bay to park, ready for the customer to pick up. He drove the next car in and began the routine oil change. The two men worked in companionable silence broken only by the radio, the phone ringing, and an occasional question from Tony.

Rob was impressed. The young man was a very hard worker. He didn’t dally between jobs, and while he might not know all the answers, he was willing to ask questions instead of causing a bigger problem by doing a job incorrectly. At one o’clock, they had finished all the work that Rob had scheduled for the day. They’d have time to work on the cars brought in for emergency work or for the next day.

Yelling at Tony to take a lunch break, Rob went into his office to eat his sandwich while calling owners with the good news that their car was ready to be picked up early. He also called several motorcycle dealerships to let them know that he now had a mechanic who could repair bikes as well as cars. They all promised to send him some business and to recommend his shop.

Heading back to the garage bays with the good news, Rob stopped when he saw Tony leaning over a car with his buttocks stretched high to reach a lower part under the hood. Rob shook his head telling himself, “You are going to get yourself in trouble even thinking about your new employee like that. He’s way too young and way too pretty.”

Rob must have made some noise because Tony stood up quickly and turned around to face him. Rob saw his eyes roll upward and Tony grabbed the side of the car as his legs began to buckle, and he slid down to sit on the floor.

Shaking the fog out of his head, Tony tried to play it off as a joke. “Hey, sorry, boss. I forgot to tell you I scare as easily as a little girl.” He lifted himself to his feet and swayed slightly for a moment as he held on to the car for support. “I’ll get back to work.” Tony turned to duck back under the car.

“Wait!” Rob said quickly. “Did you stop to have some lunch?”

Too quickly, Tony responded, “Of course. I ate a couple of protein bars from my saddlebags.” He didn’t meet Rob’s eyes as he turned to get back to work.

Tony’s motorcycle was parked in front of Rob’s office. Rob hadn’t seen Tony step a foot out of the garage area and looking at the progress Tony had made, Rob knew that he had not stopped working to eat lunch. Rob walked over to the car Tony was repairing and put his hand on Tony’s shoulder. “Stand up slowly this time, so you don’t get dizzy,” he instructed. When Tony was standing upright, Rob kept his tone firm. “I don’t care much for liars, Tony. How long has it been since you’ve eaten? The truth this time,” he demanded.

Tony opened his mouth to say something glib but then met Rob’s eyes. He just couldn’t lie to him. There was something in his eyes that made Tony tell the truth. “Food’s been a little scarce lately. I really needed this job. I’m sorry for wasting time. I’ll get some food tonight, so this doesn’t happen again,” he promised.

“Bullshit, you’ll get some food tonight. You’ll get some food right now. Grab your duffle and sleeping bag,” Rob ordered as he walked over and locked the office door. He waited in the garage while Tony detached his bags from his bike and walked back to join him. “Come up to my home. I’ll show you where you can stow your stuff, and we’ll get you something to eat
. No, I don’t want to hear it. You need some food now. I’m not going to have anyone fainting from hunger around me,” Rob said with a stern look. He led the way up the interior stairs.

The two walked through a steel door to reach Rob’s family room. “Just drop your stuff on the couch, and I’ll show you the room later.” Rob hesitated at the door as Tony set his stuff on the floor next to the couch. When he had rejoined him, Rob walked through the doorway to the kitchen and pulled out a chair at the small table. Rob poured Tony a big glass of orange juice and set it in front of him. “Start drinking that.” He watched to see Tony pick up the glass and take a big drink.

Tony didn’t even set the glass back down. He let out a low groan at the taste of the thick, country-style juice and held it back to his lips to drain it. He looked at Rob quietly and saw him pull out several containers from the refrigerator. Tony’s mouth watered as Rob quickly put together three large sandwiches of ham, cheese, and mustard. Tony tried not to pounce on the two sandwiches that Rob put in front of him.

“Eat, Tony,” Rob’s calm voice told him as he refilled Tony’s glass with orange juice before pouring one for himself. Rob sat down in the other chair and picked up the third sandwich. He carefully watched as Tony inhaled the first sandwich before picking up the second.

Tony met Rob’s eyes. “Sorry, boss.”
