“Side effects?”
“Well I have been alive for over 100 years. Now I am human again my body might want to catch up on the missing age. I just want you to be aware that it is possible I might not have that long left but we need to make sure we enjoy the time we do have together.”
Epilogue
“Welcome aboard, Flight 3223,” the flight attendant began her usual announcements over the intercom.
Logan and I sat near the back of the plane enjoying the peaceful atmosphere knowing that we were heading to a new life together in a remote part of the world that neither of us had ever been to; however, we both knew that it had lots of beaches and lots of sun. We were both excited to learn how to surf and enjoy the sand between our toes. I had plenty of plans for our future, none of which included working long hours or stressing about anything.
We thought that now we were both human, we would consider having kids, or trying to make one wouldn't hurt anyway. For now, we were going to find a nice place to live and fall in love all over again. We wanted to enjoy just being together without all the commotion of everything that had happened to us. When you have been through something like that with someone you will forever have a bond with them.
“I think I am finally getting used to this human body stuff,” Logan whispered into my ear.
“I’m glad to hear that,” I said giggling. “It will be nice to have a normal human being to walk around with rather than a gangly teenager.” I joked.
“Hey, don’t be mean,” he playfully pushed me in the arm.
I pushed back.
“It takes some getting used to, ya know to go from super strength to feeling like I can barely lift anything,” he pretended like he couldn’t lift the drink the airline had given us. “And not to mention the senses thing. I mean it’s crazy. I used to be able to hear everything. Like insects and conversations of people sitting fifteen and twenty feet away. And now it’s like someone just turned the volume down or something. Same with my sense of smell. I feel like I have a cold or something and my sinuses are all stuffed up so I can’t smell anything. It’s so bizarre.”
“I guess we humans just aren’t in tune with anything around us,” I said gesturing to him.
“That’s not what I meant,” he said. “It’s just different that’s all. I kind of find it refreshing actually. It’s hard to describe. I’m getting used it. It’s kind of nice not being overwhelmed with so much, really. Now I can focus on the things that are more important. Like you. The things that are right in front of my face instead of all the things that are taking up space in my head. There how’s that? I like something about being human more than being a shifter, eh?” he looked over at me like I should be proud of him.
I tried to act impressed, so I smiled at him. “That’s great, Logan.”
“Hey come on, now. I’m trying, I really am,” Logan said obviously disappointed in my reaction.
“I know,” I said. “I know and you’re doing a good job.” I reached over and kissed him on the nose. I knew that he was trying hard to adjust to being human. It was a difficult process for him. He had been a shifter for just over a century and changing back had been probably as much or more of shock to his system as the initial change into a shifter.
As I had my short conversation with myself, something glimmering caught my eye. I looked over and saw something shimmering on Logan’s head. I reached over and plucked a single gray hair from his head.
I smiled and chuckled as I showed it to him. “Look,” I said smiling. “Your first gray hair”
“Oh, the first,” he said smiling back at me, “I’m sure it is the first of many.”
We both laughed as the flight attendant came by and offered us refills on our drinks. We both gladly accepted.
I felt both happy and sad. In one way I was glad Logan was human once again but seeing the gray hair made me realize the downside of being human and that is the aging process. It was likely that Logan might age a bit faster then me but, in this moment, I was determined not to let those thoughts ruin my mood. Whether it was 10 more days or 10 more years I was going to enjoy and appreciate every second of it. I felt so lucky to have found real love and I was not going to let any negative thoughts ruin it.
A few hours later we landed at our destination. We stepped out into the welcoming humidity and warming sun. It was the perfect place to begin our perfect new life together. It was the perfect place where we planned to spend many years in peace, in love, in solitude.
I had finally found the one thing that I didn't even realize I needed in my life.
I had found love.
