“We can’t convict a dead man,” Hank said. “But a hearing, with both of you testifying as to the statements of the deceased, will clean up a pair of cold cases and at least set the record straight.”
“We’ll fill out complete statements later,” Jake said, and then glanced at Annie. “But right now we just want to go home.”
Hank smiled and nodded in understanding. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
Annie turned, followed Jake, and they ducked under the tape and went to their vehicle. She glanced over to the back seat of the cruiser holding the subdued killer. Jeremy sat quietly, his head down as a torrent of tears washed away the blood of his former friend.
Annie watched the cruiser pull away and disappear from sight. She was torn between absolute abhorrence and an inexplicable sympathy for the wretched young man.
The Lincolns turned their back on the scene, got into their car, and drove away quietly.
It had been a long week.

Late one night an emotionally disturbed woman, Abigail Macy, witnesses a murder. She reports what she saw to the police, but out of fear that the killer will return to eliminate her as a witness, she keeps quiet about his identity. Abigail’s condition deteriorates, and she shuts herself away, withdrawn and distraught, refusing to speak to anyone except the occasional word to her husband. To ease her tormented mind, he hires private investigators, Jake and Annie Lincoln, to find a supposed killer, with no proof that one exists.
When Abigail is found dead two days later, the coroner concludes that she had committed suicide, however the Lincolns aren’t convinced of the verdict. Now, with the only witness dead, the challenge to unravel the truth and find a murderer becomes more baffling.
The Lincolns find themselves in danger of being the killer’s next victims as they are drawn into a perilous web of lies, deceit and cover-ups.
