To Love A Wolf (Wolves of Shadow Falls) Page 6

  “Alejandro?”

  “Sí, Señor?”

“Come here for a minute. Please?”, I added so not to sound so demanding.

I watched him drop what he was doing instantly, realizing that the entire pack was still, waiting for a command as well. Looking at each one of them, I couldn't wrap my head around the fact that I was to be their leader. Did they run a democracy among the pack?

Alejandro knelt before me, head bowed like I was an actual King from the fourteen hundreds. “Please, Alejandro. Stand up. I'm not God.”

“You are our God Amigo.” He smiled. “What did you need, sir?”

“For one, don't call me Sir.” His eyes widened like a deer in the headlights. “I may have to lead the pack, but I am not any better than you.” I added to erase that look off his face.

His face relaxed. “Sí.” He nodded in agreement.

“Now, tell me more about Josephine. Has anyone tried to beat her before?”

“Oh, Sí, Señor. Many woman have tried to take her place. When they saw how unhappy your father was, they wanted to ease his pain, only to fail at the hands of the Queen. She is very strong. I've never seen her lose a fight...ever.”

  “Alejandro? How old are you?”

Smiling now, he said, “Four hundred years old.”

  “Four hundred?”

“Sí, Señor. I've lived a long time.”

  “Do wolves live forever?”

“Oh, no. We have natural lives, just as humans do, but our natural lives are just spread out longer.”

Dammit. “Is there any other way to remove Josephine from her Alpha duties?”

“I've never heard of any other way, Cevin. Only another Alpha can beat her from her current position, or death will end her reign.”

“If I choose to stay with Sam?”

“She will most likely kill your lady. Josephine hates competition, though she finds it fun to entice and tease men through their dreams, especially when they have a companion of their own. She likes to order the males of the pack to please her as well, which she's done quite often since your father passed.”

  “Can't you just say no?”

“No. She can inflict pain upon us with her mind, just as you can. It's part of being an Alpha, how you keep the young ones under control until they learn the laws and abide them.”

This was too much supernatural for me. I thought this stuff was only in the movies. “Have any of you tried to stop her before?”

“Of course. Your father has even tried to find strong females to take her down, without success. Why don't you believe me when I tell you she's very strong?”

“I do, Alejandro. I'm just trying to gather all my ducks.”

  “Ducks, Amigo?”

“Yeah. You know, get your ducks in a row?”

“No. I don't know.” He chuckled shaking his head. “You Americans never cease to amuse me. Can I get back to work now?”

“Of course. Thanks.” I watched him walk back to the others, looking up at the moon in the sky. It was bright enough to light up the field we were in that we didn't really need a fire. They had to have known that though, so why the fire? Aren't wolves supposed to be able to see in the dark? “What are you working on anyways?”

“Preparing for your first turning.” He yelled from across the other side of the clearing.

Pulling my eyebrows together, I swear my heart stopped when I watched them attach a chain, with links as big as a chain used on barter ships, to a big oak tree. This was going to be bad and I was starting to be thankful that Alejandro left Sam behind.

“It's almost time, Cevin.” Alejandro called out.

“Come with me.” Stephanie took my hand, leading me to the tree that now had chains wrapped around it. “We're sorry to have to do this.” Forcefully she pushed me to the ground, a wide metal collar placed around my neck, the snapping of the lock ringing in my ears.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“Trust me. You will be glad we did this when it's over.” Grace whispered from behind me.

Howling. I looked around at those standing in the clearing with me. Pain. Bones moving. More pain. Ringing began in my ears.

“Ah. He's a piece of art, don't you agree, Alejandro?” The voice from my dreams.

Trying to see past the pain, I caught a glimpse of the seductress walking toward me.

  “Yes, my Queen.”

Hearing my bones pop, I looked up at the moon, shining bright above us. My knee popped, what I thought was screaming in my head, turned out to be me screaming out loud. Another pop.

“It will only hurt for a minute, my love. She licked my face. “Once we mate, it will be all over.” Inhaling deeply, her tongue ran down my cheek. “Tasty. Better than I imagined.” Her hands slowly ran down my chest, bones popping under her every touch.

  “You bitch!”

“Sam?” I cried out with more pain. What the hell was she doing here? Claws broke free from the skin at my fingertips. “Run, Sam.” Holding my breath I watched Sam run at Josephine. Watching the transformation from human to wolf, for a split second, made me forget my pain. In that split second, Josephine defended her property, the wolf attacking Sam, and the human Josephine was back on me, running her tongue down my chest. I could feel the wolf in me react, wanting to ravish this woman.

“Now, my love. Let's finish this.”

I watched Sam charge again, “You fucking cunt. Get off my fiance'.” Sam screamed, fists clenched and ready to fight.

The wolf attacked again, teeth snapping, in a blur the human Josephine threw her through the fire, this time leaving Sam laying on the ground, not moving. “Sam!” I cried out. “What did you do to her?” Sam must have followed us to the clearing. I should have known she would never have given up that easily, taking orders from Alejandro. I should have searched for her. Fought for her. The thought was struggling to remain as my manhood sprung into action. I tried focusing on Sam again, not wanting to be aroused by Josephine.

“Alejandro? Get rid of the girl. She's distracting him.”

  “Don't touch her!” I demanded.

Josephine stood, staring deep into my eyes. The intensity of her stare deepened as I watched her dark eyes turn golden, the smell of vanilla and pine stronger now. My back arched, bones cracking, and I could literally feel them rearranging, some growing longer, others shorter as the wolf fought to break free. The flames on the fire grew higher and brighter with each cry of pain, Sam, a distant memory now. Josephine ripped my pants open, her lips warm and wet as she slid them over my shaft. An explosion in my head, the night became as clear as day. Breaking free from the chains, spinning Josephine around and up against the tree, I slammed my cock deep inside of her, letting the wolf have its way. Liquid splashed, a thick, sticky, syrup-like mess, soaking the tree and everyone that stood too close. One more crack of bone, the last taking its final transformation.

  I howled.

The wolf was pleased with his capture, his victory. Slowly I turned, facing my pack-mates, who now all stood in their wolf forms too. Another howl erupted, followed by howls of the pack. I sensed her presence even before she brushed up against me. Turning my head, a red wolf slowly walked up to my side, and we both faced our pack as Alpha's.

Alejandro returned to the clearing, still in human form, bringing the thought of Sam back. I had to get to her. Growling, I turned to face my new mate. She bared teeth, warning I must not go. I started backing away, slowly. Josephine pounced, and I reared up, nipping her shoulder, her attacking back in full defense mode. The pack backed up, not sure what to do. Josephine and I circled each other with snarling teeth. Josephine snapped at me, but I was faster. With all my body weight I shoved my shoulder into her, sending her into the burning flames. She yelped, I ran.

I had to get to Sam. To make sure she was alright. I looked at Alejandro.

  “She's home, Amigo.”

I ran out of the woods, using the speed of the wolf to carry me faster than I could go in huma
n form.

  S

am lay sleeping in bed. Bruises on her face had my heart aching, knowing I had been the cause. Pulling up a chair to sit beside her, I uncovered her hand from under the blankets. Rubbing her arm, I felt a strange roughness on her skin and I whipped the covers back.

  Teeth imprints.

  Sam had been bitten.

Stirring at my touch, I looked up to find dark green eyes with golden flecks staring back at me.

  Prologue

  “You got a cigarette?”

“Uh...sure. I don't think I've ever seen you smoke.” He pulled a cigarette from his pack and handed it to me.

Lighting his lighter, I took a long drag, watching the end light up bright orange. I stood on wobbly knees, Matt sliding his arm around my waist. I blew out a white puff of smoke as we walked to the truck. Matt opened the door, and laying on the seat was a can of hair spray. I grabbed it.

“Jamie.” Jake called out, Jess right behind him with her head down.

I smiled and walked towards his truck, can in hand. Matt stood by the open truck door looking between Jake and me.

  “Jamie, what are you doing?”

Opening his driver side door, I felt like I was watching myself from outside of my body. Carrie Underwood’s Before You Cheat was playing in my head and I smiled.

“Jamie?” Jake started down the stairs.

I smiled taking the cigarette from my mouth. Holding it in front of me, I grinned one last time at Jake before spraying the can directly at the burning end of my cigarette. The cigarette ignited like a torch, blowing flames into the cab of Jake's truck.

“Jamie! Dammit!” Jake was running towards me and his precious truck now.

The truck ignited like a forest fire, the contents inside bursting into flames and Matt grabbed me, dragging me back to our old pick up. Jake turned and ran in the other direction, getting away just as the truck exploded with a loud boom, shrapnel flying in every direction. People rushed out of the bar, sirens in the distance.

The explosion pushed Matt and I to the ground, Matt hovering over top of me. I turned my head and watched the truck light up the night

. I looked at Jake and Jess. Jake too was on the ground, Jess kneeling at his side. An evil grin spread across my face as the local sheriff pulled into the parking lot, the fire crew behind them.

The firemen got to work spraying water over the fire as the Sheriff pulled me to his car. “I'm sorry to do this Jamie”. In high heels and handcuffs, I glared at Jake one last time before Dale placed me in the back of his car. A steel cage in front of me, Dale slid behind the driver's seat, turned the sirens on and took me to the station for booking.

  Chapter One

Staring at the cold dinner on the table, I picked up my glass of wine, watching the red liquid swirl and slosh. This is the tenth night in a row that Jake didn't come home for dinner. Each night I slaved over a hot stove, having dinner ready and on the table for when he got home from work, and he never shows. The last few months our relationship has been strained, now he has quit coming home until wee hours in the morning, and drunk..

Jake and I have been married for three years now. I thought we would be together forever. I was so madly in love with him. He used to worship the ground I walked on, doting on my every need. I felt like the luckiest woman in the world to have such a loving husband, like the only woman in the world.

I had met him one night while I was out with the girls. I'd been studying so hard in my final semester of college, and they thought I could use a night out. He was so cute, standing in the corner with his buddies, watching me over the rim of his beer mug every time he took a sip. When he finally worked up the nerve to talk to me, I fell instantly. His voice was deep, and sexy, his hands constantly fidgeting. He walked me to my car, and being the gentleman he was, true to his cowboy roots, he asked to kiss me. We dated for three months then decided to tie the knot. We both just knew in our hearts it was meant to be, and against both our families wishes to wait, we went for it.

Life had been really good. Jake and I ran a horse farm together, we had a fabulous house and a great dog, Max. I didn't think life could get any better, then I started longing for a baby. Jake was so happy at the thought to be a dad. When we found out I was pregnant, I thought he might burst with enthusiasm. We were going to be a real family.

That was until something went completely wrong and I lost the baby. One night I had to call Jake away from the barn because I was having labor pains. He rushed me right to the hospital, and for no reason at all, I miscarried. They said it was just God's will and kept me overnight. When I came home the next day, Jake was distant. I needed him, and he decided he had to work late. He worked on our farm, and was practically right behind the closed door, which is what made it all the worse. It's not like he worked in a factory or in some office that was expecting him to work late. No, this was all his choice. I knew he was hurting so I gave him time. As time went on though, the further we grew apart. Depression set in, not wanting to lose my husband too, I figured I would concentrate on being a better housewife and dote on him for a while. Was I way off base. The more I tried to show him I loved him, the further he went. At first it was just working late until he knew I was sleeping. Then he'd work late and sleep on the couch. “I didn't want to wake you.” Now he wasn't coming home until early morning and he was always plastered.

I continued to cook dinners though, hoping one day he would realize that I still loved him and we could work on getting things back to normal. Tonight was my last nerve fraying. I left supper on the table, gulped down another glass of wine then went to bed. Tomorrow I was going to talk to Jake, whether he wanted to or not, and we were going to resolve this. I loved him, and wasn't about to lose him. Not now.

I heard Jake come home drunk once again. I snuck to the door and watched him crawl on the couch and fall asleep. Once he passed out, I took the drill and added two thick hooks to the door frame. Once I had them in position, I padlocked a thick chain across the door in the shape of a giant X. Jake was not leaving until we talked this over.

“Jamie! Jamie! What the hell is this?” Jake was screaming from the living room.

Raising my brows I chuckled softly. “Guess he found the chains.” Slowly I walked out of my bedroom to find Jake standing by the door, dressed for work. Sneaking out before the sun was up as usual.

“What is this? Unlock it right now.”

I stood looking at him, amused at how ridiculous this all actually was. I had to lock the door, locking my husband inside, just to get him to talk to me. Lord give me strength.

  “Now Jamie.”

  “No.”

“No? What do you mean no? I have to go to work. Now unlock this door!”

“No.” I could be very stubborn when I wanted to be.

“Jamie. The guys need me today. I've got to run to town and get feed for the horses and we're baling the west field. They can't do that without my help. Now unlock this door.”

“No. Not until you talk to me Jake Riley. You've not talked to me in months. Every night I have supper ready for you on that table, and you choose to go to Moe's instead to get drunk. Now you will
talk to me and tell me what's bothering you, what I've done or what I can do to make things better, or you don't get out this door.”

Inhaling deeply, he spoke low trying to keep his calm. “Jamie, please? I don't have time to talk right now. There's work to be done. This is what pays for this farm, now unlock this door!”

“Jake Riley you better start talking if you want to go to work that bad.” I stood with my hands on my hips, waiting.

“Jamie, I'll be home tonight for dinner. We can talk then.”

I squinted my eyes, not moving.

  “I promise Jamie.”

“Fine. You better be home then, and sober too. If you're not, your in big trouble Jake.” I unlocked the padlock. He reached for the door but I stood in front of it. He sighed, looking to the floor. “Jake, I love you.” I stood on my tip toes, and kissed him on the cheek.

  He left without another word.

  Chapter 1

Heat from his breath sent chills down my spine as he continued to sweep kisses down my neck. I closed my eyes, wanting to hold onto this moment. I was a woman now. Channing had consummated that deal, a war in my own mind, the first night we made love. He moved his lips along my collar bone, pulling my shirt off my shoulder to give him access to skin. Brushing his lips over my shoulder, I moaned out.

His hands worked their magic, as he lifted my shirt over my head and removed my bra. He rubbed his fingers over my nubs until they formed stiff peaks. I arched my back, my breathing quickening. Bringing his mouth lower, his tongue flicked across my nipple, and it was almost more than I could handle. I came up on my elbows head arching backwards, my legs falling apart inviting him in. I wanted to feel his manhood inside of me, giving me the pleasure I'd first experienced. I wanted that ecstasy again, to see the desire in his eyes. Watching that desire form and dance in those icy, lapus blue eyes was enough to make my body respond in a lot of ways.
