I turned to Alec, cuddling in closer and leaning into his taut, heated body, gazing into his eyes as he stared right back at mine. Our connection was real, vibrant and palpable in the look we shared.
“Kara, I’ve finally found you. My true mate.”
“Your… mate?”
“As soon as you walked into that apartment, I felt something I’ve never felt before. Your presence, your scent, the glimpse I caught of your beautiful face,” he said as he pulled me in for another kiss. “I was completely obsessed with and overwhelmed by your presence, and I knew that I had to have you. I knew that you were my fated mate.”
“Is… is that how you found me out here?”

I couldn’t possibly begin to understand exactly what he was saying, but it’d be a lie to admit that I wasn’t somehow comforted to hear these strange words. His sincerity was undeniable, and it just seemed to make sense somehow, that it was purely in his nature. He was acting on an instinct of protection, an instinct for life.
Tonight had been the most frightening night that I’d ever experienced. I recalled everything that happened in a flash of horror, confusion, fear, lust… it was impossible to process it all at once. And yet, I couldn’t help but feel more at a peace in my mind than I’d felt in a very long time.
