“I like that idea. I love you Jake.”

  “I love you too, Steph.”

And as they drifted off to sleep in each other’s arms, both knew their love was indeed going to last forever in time.

  Epilogue

Jake lay in bed, with Stephanie cradled in his arms. Her warm breath fanned across his chest, her legs intertwined with his. It felt so good to be together again, to feel whole again. It had been an eventful day—too eventful for his liking. For a few moments, he’d actually wondered if they would even have their future together, but thankfully everything had worked out and all the ends were nicely tied up, except…

A faint frown marred his brow as he thought back to one particular instant. The police had just taken Jarrod and Murray away. Steph and Ella had been chatting and he’d been half listening, when suddenly he became aware of another mind touching his. It had just skimmed over, not really delving for information, almost as if the person controlling it wasn’t totally versed in telepathic principles.

He knew there were more of his kind roaming the Earth. On rare occasions they would encounter each other but for the most part there was no connection between them. They did not seek each other out unless dire circumstances required it. Was this presence one of his kind, a purebred, or even a hybrid such as himself? It was unique, yet familiar…

Looking around, he’d probed those near him. It wasn’t something he often did. Examining another’s thoughts was both an invasion of privacy and disturbing—being privy to someone’s darkest thoughts or deepest secrets was not an easy thing to deal with. True, his mind connected with Stephanie’s, but they were bonded and for them it was an act of intimacy.

Finally, he’d settled on a young police officer who was crossing the lawn, heading towards Paula. There had been something about him, but then, just as he’d started to focus in on the man, Ella had spoken and the opportunity was lost.

Shifting slightly, he hugged Stephanie closer and rested his chin on her head. Possibly, he’d imagined the brief telepathic connection. It could have just been the aftermath of his close call that afternoon. After all, he’d never come that close to ‘dying’ before. Who knew what effects it might have had on him?

He considered the situation again and then dismissed it from his mind. What were the chances of encountering someone like himself? It must have been his mind playing tricks on him. Closing his eyes, he sighed happily. Stephanie and he would share a peaceful, uneventful future just like he’d planned.
