Strike a Match 2 Page 29

by Frank Tayell

“A good point. I’ve had a word with Perez. I don’t think he will use that information, because he knows that if he tries, I’ll come after him.”

  “But he’ll be the president!”

Mitchell smiled. “I didn’t mean with a gun.” He tapped his pocket. “They called them phones, but even in the old world I didn’t use mine to make calls. They can do more than take photographs. They can record video, and sound.”

“What do you… you mean you recorded what he said in that room in the embassy?”

“Of course. That’s our insurance against Perez’s honest behaviour.”

  “Politics,” she sighed.

  “It’s better than the alternative.”

They continued in silence for another few minutes.

“Where are we going?” Ruth asked.

“The coast,” Mitchell said. “We have done our duty for the day, and any that’s left can wait until tomorrow. I always liked walking down to the sea and looking at those rusting hulks. Emmitt might have used that information against us, but I’m not going to let that taint my memories of the past.”

  “Life goes on,” Ruth said.

  “It does, indeed.”

  The end.
