Wake Up, Sir!: A Novel Page 34

by Jonathan Ames

  “Are you teasing me, Jeeves?”

  “Yes and no, sir.”

I laughed. Jeeves was a wonder.

“You're too good to be true, Jeeves,” I said.

  “Thank you, sir.”

“Not too many people are too good to be true, Jeeves, but you definitely fall into that category.”

  “Very good, sir.”

We drove on. After a while, the road grew smoky and then completely black. My headlights failed. I acquiesced. I let myself drive without light. It was like falling in a dream. When I was a child, my mother would tuck me in and sing to me every night the same song:

  Little boy, you're tired,

  little boy, you're blue,

you've had a busy day today,

so go to sleep, my sweetheart,

  and dream all your cares

  away.
