Looking down at the house keys in her hand, Jaxon shook her head. “Nope, that’s it. I sold the house and all its contents, so all I had to do was get rid of what personal items I’m not taking with me. I will drop the keys off at the realtor’s as we head out of town.”

Sloan handed her a plain manila envelope. “Well, here is your first packet. I think I hear Trudy’s beast roaring our way, so I will let you two get going. I will catch up with you later at Mollie’s.”

“Ok, sure. So, did you find her a new toy to replace the feather? You know she will haunt you forever if you don’t,” she pointed out with a grin. Even though she and Sloan were no longer part of the D.C.P.D., she still had every intention of using Mollie for whatever she might need her for. The brilliant yet spunky redhead was a valuable friend and ally.

Sloan groaned as he looked skyward. “No, I completely forgot. I will find her something to chew on,” he promised as he started to shimmer from view.

“Hey, Sloan?” Jaxon called out before he vanished completely.

Sloan stopped and waited while she walked up to him. Reaching up, she pulled him down into a tight hug. “I just wanted to say thank you for everything. I know I wasn’t the easiest Muharreb to recruit.”

Returning her hug, Sloan chuckled. “No, you most certainly were not. But do you know what?”

  “What?”

“You were worth every minute of trouble.” He gave her a quick squeeze then shimmered out of sight.

Jaxon chuckled as she walked up her driveway for the last time and locked the door. As she turned around, she saw Trudy pull into her driveway. A few months ago, she never would have thought that her life could be changed so radically. She saw Trudy reach down and fiddle with something under the dash of his beloved truck. Higgins gave a welcoming woof to Trudy as he shoved his head out of the small window Jaxon had put in for him. Walking up to Trudy’s truck, he nodded toward the envelope in her hand.

“Well, where are we headed?” he asked.

“I don’t know yet. I haven’t opened it.” Lifting the flap, she pulled a single folded slip of paper, a black reloadable Visa credit card, and a door key card for a Comfort Inn in Galveston Texas.

“Better practice your southern drawl, my friend. We are headed to the great state of Texas,” she said with a grin.

“Well, yee-haw! Let’s get-along-little-doggy, we got miles to travel. Follow me and try to keep up,” he said as he started the motor.

Jaxon laughed as she walked around and climbed into her tank of a truck. Watching Trudy as he backed out, she reached down and twisted the ignition. The satisfying sound of hundreds of horses pawing the ground under its hood made her give the motor a couple of extra revs, just enjoying the feel of power under her foot. Backing out, she put the truck in drive and hit the gas.

She had no idea where this new life would lead her. But she knew without a doubt that God would direct her path and take her where he wanted her to be… just as he always had.
