You’re too fearless for your own good. Roxy’s voice whispered in her ear as she took the first step.
She started down the steps on her tiptoes, following the twinkling light. She took the curve in the stairs and stepped into what appeared to be a tiny office. A really old, creepy-looking office with a single desk, computer, filing cabinet and a wall lined with shelves of books. A small lamp was on—but that wasn’t the twinkling light she saw.
“Mrs. Thorne?” Her voice cracked, and her cheeks immediately flushed. Okay, so she was freaked out. Scared, even. Who the hell wouldn’t be in this creepy-ass room?
She looked around, catching the twinkle of the blue light…from behind the wall of books?
What the hell?
She slowly walked to the wall, leaned forward and squinted between the leather-bound books.
The light, again.
She pushed two books apart with her fingertips and peered closer.
Her mouth gaped open—there was a freaking room behind the wall.
She straightened, looked behind her, then almost laughed—she just needed to find the right book to pull, and a secret door would slide open. Right?
She ran her hands along the books, looking for a door, or anything that would lead to the room.
Nothing.
Dammit, there’s got to be a way back there.
Her gaze landed on the file cabinet. She walked over, and with a grunt, pushed it to the side.
Bingo!
A small, thin door.
Her heart pounded as she slowly turned the knob and pushed the door open. A sweet scent that she didn’t recognize filled her nose. After a quick glance over her shoulder, she ducked and stepped into the small, dark room.
Her eyes rounded as she straightened and looked around.
An eerie blue light danced on the dozens of books that lined the stone walls. Wooden, handmade-looking objects hung from the low ceiling, swaying in a breeze that she didn’t feel. In the center was a table with a mound of candles, each lit, glowing with a twinkling blue flame. Not red, not orange—blue. Her gaze landed on the rug beneath the table.
The hair on the back of her neck stood on its ends.
Woven into the rug was a Pentagram—the universal sign of witchcraft.
“Oh, my God,” she breathed.
She looked at the wall of books and noticed that each book was centered around one big black book, facing forward, secured in its own iron easel.
No way.
No. Freaking. Way.
As she squinted and stepped forward, the blue light illuminated the silver letters on the front—The Great Shadow Book of Secrets.
“Oh, my God.” She lunged forward and grabbed it.
Her hands trembled as she opened the leather binding. There it was—Krestel's book of spells. Her heart hammered as she flipped the pages, completely awestruck at what she held in her hands.
"I have to get this to the girls—
The door slammed behind her.
Ice-cold terror ripped through her as she spun around.
Her breath caught.
Her heart stopped.
“Krestel,” she whispered.
