Damn, I have to get this Archery skill higher. Arthur thought to himself. The cat took off, running toward him. Luckily the arrow did slow it a bit, but it wasn’t much. He barely had the time to get one more bolt off, which stuck in the cat’s front shoulder but must have hit bone because it didn’t score a critical hit.

The cat was now too close to mess with his bow, so he dropped it and pulled the sword. He decided to use surprise and charged at the cat. Right before he reached it, he swung the sword in a horizontal arc. The cat came to a quick halt and jumped backward. The cat stalked around him as they circled each other for a few moments. The cat lunged at him and swiped with a claw. He swung his sword out to intercept the paw and was pleased when the sword bit into its leg.

The cat backed up again and limped a little on the leg. Arthur had a moment to look around since the cat had backed up and noticed that Vana and Allendria seemed to be holding out without much issue. Samson, on the other hand, was getting battered. The boss’s blows looked to be hitting hard, and each hit caused him to stumble. Luckily his defense seemed to be holding up. Arthur shifted his focus back to his fight. He needed to hurry and dispatch this animal to help Samson. It was time for him to take a risk.
He charged at the animal and swung in a downward arc toward its head. As expected, it leaped a step to its right to avoid the hit. Arthur had hoped it would go that direction. He pulled the sword out of its swing and stepped in and lunged at the cat point first. The end went straight through its neck and scraped across the bone. The blow was devastating, though, and looked like it had severed its airway.
You have dealt 106 damage to Night Stalker (1)(Level 10) with Steel Longsword of Minor Beastslaying (Critical Hit)(Mortal Blow)(Fatal Blow).
Arthur rushed to his bow now that the smaller cat was out of the fight. He got the bow up and let an arrow fly at the boss. The shaft sunk into its side. The creature didn’t even flinch when it hit.

Well, at that amount of damage, he didn’t even have enough arrows to possibly kill it. He decided he would have to leave ranged damage to Vana and go in with his sword. He took a glance and saw Vana circling her cat, but she was in a dead sprint as she did and was still putting arrows in it. The thing was moving slow, and Arthur was sure it would be down in no time. He took a glance at Allendria and immediately changed his plan. She was struggling and had taken a nasty gash on one of her legs. He switched focus and activated Aim Shot to send an arrow into her cat and hit it in the heart.

That should take care of that. Arthur dropped the bow again, grabbed his sword, and charged the boss. He approached it from the side while Samson continued to struggle against it. He charged straight at the cat and rammed his sword all the way to the hilt, directly into the cat’s ribcage. Arthur roared in triumph. That feeling lasted all of two seconds until the cat swung full force at him. He was caught off guard and took the full force of the blow directly in his chest. The powerful attack launched him backward, and he rolled across the ground.

“Son of a bitch that hurt.” Arthur spat as he slowly got back to his feet. The right side of his ribcage ached maddeningly, and he was a bit dizzy trying to get up. Thank God his previous damage had recovered or that would have indeed taken him dangerously close to death. He took stock of the battle as he tried to catch his breath. Allendria was launching fire at the boss but was looking drained. Arthur knew she was about out of mana and had a feeling she would be next to useless when she got to that point. Samson had several cuts on his arms and legs. He even had a cut on his forehead that was bleeding down his right cheek. Arthur had a nagging feeling that Samson was almost out of stamina, and if that happened, he would be in big trouble.
Vana was strafing the boss, sending in arrows as fast as she could. Most of her shots didn’t seem to affect the boss much. If she hit a meatier part of the animal, it seemed to stop short and do minimal damage like his shot. He did see two arrows in the beast that had caused bleeding, though. One bolt was in its ribcage and had punched through, causing bleeding. The second one was in the base of its neck on the bottom side. He took a quick check of the boss with a scan.

It appeared their attacks were taking their toll, but they needed to end this quickly before they ran out of mana and stamina. Arthur needed to come up with a plan and fast.
“Samson, you have the strength left for one good attack?” Arthur yelled.
“If we can do it soon. Blocking is taking most of my stamina.” He told him.
“Allendria and Vana. Can you each give us one good shot to its face? Let me get a bit closer and blast it. We need it distracted more than anything. Samson, when they distract it, you circle to the right, and I’ll get to the left. Each of us can take one good downward chop to its neck. With luck, that should be enough damage to take it out.” He told him.
“I’m with you,” Samson told him.
Arthur started creeping toward the side of the cat again. When he was ten feet away, he yelled to the girls, “Now!”. Allendria let loose a massive fireball at the boss’s face while Vana let fly an arrow she had been concentrating on. Arthur saw the bolt glow a bit and start spinning as it flew and hit right in the boss’s left eye. Arthur charged forward while Samson sidestepped to the opposite side of the cat, and each brought their sword down in a powerful stroke. Their swords both cut into the neck and came to a halt against the cat’s spine. The cat collapsed on the ground in a heap and went still.

Congratulations, you have reached level 9! You now have 13 available skill points.
That was an awesome bonus. To top it off, Arthur had reached level 9. Oddly enough, his pains all disappeared. The ribs were excellent, and nothing hurt anymore. He checked his health, and it was back at full.
“Anyone hurt? Anyone need any help?” Arthur asked.
The party took a look around and checked themselves and each other. They all shook their heads.
“I would imagine that big experience boost at the end probably leveled us all up so that would have completely restored our health.” Vana finally said.
That was good to know. Leveling up was an instant reset on your health and statuses. They all looked around and explored the room for a minute. In the far back of the room was a long treasure chest that sat around five feet long and three-feet-wide. It was a sturdy wood, possibly oak, and it was banded in riveted iron. Arthur approached the chest and carefully lifted it. Inside was a beautiful bow that looked to be made of molten silver and under the bow was a quiver of arrows. Arthur picked up both to check them.

The haul was amazing. What are the odds he would get exactly what they needed? Arthur thought to himself.
“Vana, this is your lucky day. I told you I wanted to find you a good bow, and based on your final skill shot against the boss, I know you have a good base in archery, so I feel comfortable giving you this prize.” Arthur told her as he handed the bow and quiver of arrows to her. She took them reverently at first and then turned back to Arthur.
“I cannot take these Arthur. I know you could use them as well.” Vana said as she started to hand them back to him.
Arthur shook his head, “No, you have earned it. You are a far better archer than I am right now and could put it to better use than I. I only ask you save those steel arrows for an emergency or our big confrontation.” Arthur told her.
“Consider it done,” Vana told him seriously.
Arthur was about to close the chest when he saw something tucked into one corner. He pulled it out and saw that it was a small, folded piece of paper. He took a step over by himself and opened it.
My Dearest Arthur,
You continue to persevere, and I am proud of your progress. Your efforts have started to show returns now. I have started to get the occasional prayer from Rowan and Daniel now, so a few people are beginning to come around. I have a feeling this number will continue to grow. Please accept these needed items as a token of my appreciation for your hard work and continue to make me proud, my champion.
Your Goddess,
Lianna
He should have known she would have had a hand in this. She had told him last time she couldn’t directly hand him anything, but she could alter what he received from rewards in some locations. Leave it up to her to read his needs and throw him a bone. He decided this was an excellent time to try and spread the influence again. He held the note up and quickly burned it with a channeled weak flame.

“It seems the Goddess Lianna is the one to thank for those gifts, Vana. That was a letter from her congratulating us on our achievement and sending her best wishes with the items. It appears our party is blessed.”
Each of the members looked at him with a bit of awe in their faces. Arthur decided to explore a bit more. This cave would be the perfect spot to check for minerals and ore. He knew it wasn’t uncommon for dungeons in games to have hidden treasures and mining spots, so why should this be any different?
While he went to the closest wall, he noticed the rest of the party had started gutting the cats. He put his hand up to the wall and cast his magical prospecting spell.

His first two attempts yielded nothing as he circled the room. On his third attempt, though, he found something useful but unexpected. He thought about it for a moment but decided to go ahead and use his spell to extract what was in the stone. He didn’t relish the idea of swinging a pick at the wall. He still had mana to spare anyway. He cast his Transform Stone: Gravel spell, and after some time, his rewards fell out of the wall.

That was a good find. Arthur wasn’t sure what he would use them for, but thirty-five pieces of sapphire the size of his thumbnail were sure to come in handy for something. He decided to put them in his bag and keep going around the room. He had enough mana to cast one more prospecting spell, so he moved to the next space and cast it again but found nothing there.

Arthur had to kill some time while waiting for his mana to regenerate a bit, so he decided to assess the skill points he had earned. He now had thirteen points banked, and he wasn’t one that believed in saving them. That is just wasted stats that could save his life in a fight. He had already messed up and forgot to assign the first five before they faced the boss. He took a quick look at his current status.

Looking at his sheet Arthur decided it was time for him to try and specialize a bit. He currently was spread pretty even and balanced, but now that he had a bit of time under his belt, he needed to figure out what class would be best. A magic-related class would be a must. They had a ranger, a tank, and a caster, so that left him with the melee damage role. He decided he needed to consult with Allendria. She seemed to have a much better knowledge base being from another race of people. He hoped she would have some useful information for him.
