Baby vs. the Bar Page 25

by MJ Rodgers

Remy immediately gathered Nicholas into her arms, gave him a hug and turned to Marc’s solemn face. She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.

“For the record, Marc Truesdale, I love you, too. And, yes, I would very much like to marry you.”

Remy smiled as she watched Marc’s eyes widen and his jaw drop. “What?”

“Oh, I wish I had a camera. To be able to capture this expression on the face of Seattle’s most sophisticated attorney.”

Marc grabbed her shoulders, his heart racing through his hands. “Remy, I don’t understand. You said—”

“Marc, I’m sorry, but I had to be sure. When you refused to give me empty promises, when you went in there and proved Nicholas to be David’s son, when you lived up to your word, I knew then that you are a man who can be trusted. A man with whom I want to spend the rest of my life.”

“Remy,” he said, sighing, as he gathered both her and Nicholas into his arms.

“Give the boy to me, Truesdale,” Louie Demerchant said, “then you can hug the lady properly.”

“No, thanks, Mr. Demerchant,” Marc said, smiling. “I’m holding on tight to them both. From now on.”

“I hope you let us have Nicholas long enough so we can continue his sign-language sessions with Thumper,” Phil said.

Remy turned to her sister. “I suppose as long as we have a million a year, we might as well put it to some good use.”

“No, Louie’s putting up the money, Remy,” Phil said. “No strings attached. Sounded like a good deal to me.”

Louie looked uncomfortable as Remy’s eyes shifted to his face. “It’s nothing. Least I could do after all the trouble my...after all the trouble. I hope you’ll let me come by sometimes to see the boy, but if you’d rather not, I understand.”

Remy smiled. “We hope you’ll come by often. I can’t think of a better great-grandfather for Nicholas to have, Mr. Demerchant.”

Louie smiled as the tears gathered in his eyes. “Thank you, my dear.”

Marc hugged Remy again. “You are just full of surprises. Next, you’ll be telling me you really don’t mind that Nicholas is worth a billion dollars.”

Her chin went up. “He’s worth a great deal more than that. It’s going to take a lot of diligent effort on both our parts to make sure he learns how to strive for and achieve his potential, so no running out and buying him every expensive pair of sneakers he wants.”

“You are tough, lady,” Marc said proudly.

Her eyes glowed with golden light. “That’s because the mommy of a billion-dollar baby has to be.”

“And the daddy,” Marc said, tapping Nicholas’s nose.

“Daddy?” Nicholas repeated, once again grabbing hold of Marc’s finger.

“Yes, Daddy,” Remy said with a smile.
