After a long moment, Randall nodded. “Yeah, that I can use.”

Taylor ruffled Angelica’s hair. “Yeah, not bad. You think pretty fast, don’t you?”

“So, with that taken care of,” Randall said, leaning forward in his chair, elbows on his knees, hands clasped in front of him, “is it true Griselda is dead?”

Angelica inhaled sharply. It was a memory she could do very well without.

“Very,” Taylor said with a grimace, pulling Angelica closer, letting her know that he understood, that he was still there.

  “And her men?”

“Were left to the tender attention of the locals,” Angelica said with more than a little bloodthirsty glee, which surprised even her.

This is the thing that surprises you out of all of this?

“Turns out,” Taylor added, leaning over to pour some coffee for his boss, “They have an old autonomy clause that was granted to them hundreds of years ago. What happens on their land, stays on their land.”

“And currently, a large number of unarmed former drug dealers are staying on their land. I believe that they dealt with them as they thought best,” Angelica chimed in.

Randall leaned over to take the offered cup from Taylor. He stirred in a packet of sugar as he spoke. “And from my estimation about six people from your town attended your, uh, wedding.”

Taylor nodded. “Yeah. They all wanted to be there, too. It’s good to know when people have your back. Seems a shame that we have to have another wedding, just to make it all legal.”

“Taylor,” Angelica bit her lip, trying to cover for the sudden surge of emotion that his words had given her. “You don’t have to take it that far. It’s just a cover; I’m fine.”

Randall tossed a small object to Taylor. “Seems like you might be needing this after all,” he murmured, and sat back to sip his coffee.

  “Taylor?”

“I asked Randall to bring this by,” Taylor said. “I got this when we got back from Africa, but things got crazy...” He held it in his open palm. It was a small, black velvet box. Angelica looked at Randall and then at Taylor.

  “What?”

  Oh, shit!

She stared at it, not daring to touch it. Taylor finally leaned forward and opened the lid. Inside was a sparkling promise, a future in a diamond.

“I know we’ve used it as a cover a couple dozen times. And talked about it so many times to so many people, but somehow we never got around to making it real. To making it official. So I’m asking you for the last time, will you marry me? Officially, I mean.”

Angelica threw herself into his arms and knocked them both off the couch. They crashed into the coffee table, but she didn’t care. She was crying as he slid the ring onto her finger.

“I mean it,” he warned her. “There’s going to be a ceremony and everything. You’re not getting out if it this time.”

She nodded wildly, lifting her hand to stare at the way the diamond caught the light. She could swear her inner lion was purring. If lions actually purred.

“Congratulations.” Randall smiled. It was the first genuine smile she’d ever seen from him. “And don’t worry about the coffee table—I’ll consider it a wedding present.”

“Oh, Randall, I’m sorry! I just—” Angelica was gushing and she knew it. Taylor beamed from ear to ear.

“Listen, take a long and happy honeymoon at your own expense. But I’m rude enough to interfere in this moment because I want to talk to you about after.”

“After?” Angelica and Taylor exchanged glances.

“Unless you found a long-lost treasure in Nepal, you’re going to have to work eventually.”

“I’ll come back as soon as you need me,” Taylor promised.

“I’m afraid that won’t happen. Don’t look so shocked. There have been too many questions about you lately, and I’ve had to do some pretty heavy lifting just to keep you under the radar. As an agent, your days are done.”

  “But—”

“However, there is a different division. A brand new one in fact, that I’ve just begun. It’s an off-the record group of international...” There was a polite knock at the door. Randall looked up. “Ah, I expect that’s her now. Right on time.”

Angelica looked to Taylor, who shrugged.

Randall continued speaking as he went to the door. “I want you both to lead the team,” he said over his shoulder.

  “Wait, what?”

  “Me? I’m a doctor. I don’t—”

But Randall was ignoring them. He’d already opened the door. He spoke quietly to the person on the other side and stepped back.

A long-legged girl of about sixteen walked in. She was wearing a short skirt, and a light beige sweater that perfectly set off her ebony skin. She carried herself like Cinderella at the ball, dignified but with a little uncertainty of her place.

She walked in and waved shyly at them both, a brilliant grin splitting her angular face.

“This is your first trainee and teammate, and her name is...”

“CHARRA!” Angelica screamed, the face suddenly clicking in her memory. “CHARRA?”

The girl grinned and nodded. Angelica ran to embrace her, pulling her right off the floor and swinging her around the room in absolute glee.

Taylor turned to Randall. “A team of shifters? Are you crazy?”

“Yes.” Randall nodded, watching the women greet each other. “I’m also best man.”

Taylor looked at him a long moment and lay a hand on Randall’s shoulder. It might have morphed a little bit as he pressed down.

“And get that hairy thing off me...”
