Without another word, the others walked away. Cael laboriously followed.
Ambrey moved to my side and watched them leave.
“What do you think the Lutha will do when they return without you?” she asked.
I chuckled and wrapped my arms around her. She sighed and leaned close, inhaling my scent.
“She’ll scramble to pick some other unlucky soul to mate her crazy daughter.”
“You don’t mind giving up the community, the power?”
“Hell no. I’m relieved they’re finally going back with the message I’ve been telling them all along. There was no way in hell I was ever going to accept her daughter.”
“Good. Now, let’s go home. You smell like bacon, and I’m hungry.”
I laughed and kissed the top of her head. Home sounded good.
Wrapping my arm around her shoulder, we slowly walked the streets, our futures both free.
