“Can we move her?” Legrant asked worriedly.
“Yes, but carefully. She’s lost a lot of blood.”
Caleb put his hands under her as carefully as he could. Meryl moaned a little in pain, but when Caleb lifted her up she felt his grip and relaxed, it felt as if she were back at home.
“Hey, Caleb,” Meryl closed her eyes, exhausted. “George is at peace now. He’s with Mom.”
“Yes, Meryl and you’ll be home soon.”
Feeling the fresh air after being trapped under the body of her brother longer than anyone would have wanted. Meryl felt that she forgot something because she knew that she had died. Meryl had felt how her heart stopped after a sharp agony. She wondered if she had returned to that mysterious place. If she spoke once more with Agatha but she didn’t remember anything. It was simply inexplicable, a miracle.
With great effort and many deaths, they had managed to change their future. Their predicted deaths and the defeat that would take the world to a sad end. But not everyone had survived the last battle. Epsilon was dead, Akad too. And hundreds of humans, vampires and soldiers. Now, their battles had not come to an end. There would be much to do before they could have a fair world for all, but they had taken the first step in the right direction. They returned to look at their fallen. All of those who had given their lives for a better future. The thousands of corpses began to be lit up when a thick beam of light pierced the dark clouds that covered the sky. The sun was beginning to appear and no one knew why. It just happened at that moment and after two hundred years the sun returned to bathe the earth, but it didn’t matter, nothing mattered anymore.
“Look, Caleb.” Half asleep, Meryl opened her eyes slightly as she felt the light on her. “What she told me in the dream is happening. Mom, or Agatha ... how did she know? It’s really nice. Let’s go home, please.”
“Drink Meryl. You need your strength to recover.”

Ajax and Elizabeth decided to stay in Omega Zone. It was the one place in the world that needed the most attention, and in addition, it was also the place that harbored the most detractors of the new era that was to come. Legrant and Johana would also stay there for a few months. Not only to help but for her to recover. Like Meryl Johana needed many weeks of bedrest. Before they left the continent, they met to decide how they were going to divide the four zones that divided the world, into a larger number of zones. They paid special attention to leaving in charge adequate people that they would continue to watch through a council that would be formed by humans and vampires. There would also be new regulations, laws, and agreements between the two. They had to create a new society from scratch, and the road, besides being long, was going to be very complicated. They now depended on each other.
During the next few days, the few soldiers who had survived sailed home on one of the ships. They asked Caleb to visit their homeland soon when Meryl was better. Pein decided to go with them for a while. He didn’t feel ready to return to the mansion, a place that reminded him of Alexander. In addition, Pein was totally determined to train. He wanted to lead Alpha’s new police force after Cristian’s death.
When Caleb’s plane landed after too many hours in the air, the normalcy of the place was surprising and astonishing. The people of the city continued their quiet life. The city had changed noticeably thanks to Caleb’s instructions before leaving. Jeoff was once again driving the dark-colored car, but with a slight change, Luxt was sitting as his copilot. Meryl, already a little better with the passage of the first days was sitting in her usual place, next to Caleb. Who watched in his typical pose, with his chin resting on his closed fist, through the window. At that moment she saw him remember the first time she got into the car. When she looked at him, stunned, terrified, and now her eyes were flooded with love for him. To think about how he had changed in that year of his life was simply awesome and incredible. They passed through the door of the mansion that Meryl had missed so much. There was dirt and darkness, but the light that penetrated through the windows was beautiful. Meryl almost saw before her eyes a new house.
“We’re home,” Meryl whispered entering with the support of Caleb’s arm.
The lack of Alexander felt terrible. Especially to Caleb, who had lived with him for more than one hundred years.
“It’s a new beginning,” Caleb added. “I hope to enjoy a long stretch of peace. Although there is still much to do.”
“We’ll get it. We’ve won a war that was unwinnable and almost everyone survived,” Jeoff added. “We have earned it. It is our right.”
“I hope I’m not a nuisance,” Luxt said suddenly. “If that’s the case. I’ll look for a place to live.”
“You’re not.” Jeoff approached him, laying a hand on his shoulder. Caleb nodded with a smile.
“Of course not, but I hope you do not break the tranquility,” Caleb said, approaching the stairs beside Meryl. “This lady is going to need a lot of rest.”
“I think it’s time to remind you of what happened months ago when you fed on Caleb,” Jeoff teased, taking off his glasses. He surprised Meryl when he smiled with a small laugh. “In addition, I must add you are the one who should let her recover. You must keep your hands still.”
“Touché my friend. Now let’s go rest, have dinner and drink to Alexander. He will always be present in this house.”
Alone in Caleb’s room, which would now also be her room, Meryl looked out the window. She found it hard to recognize surroundings that had been so gloomy in the past. In front, was the leafy forest where she tried to escape from Caleb. It didn’t frighten her anymore. The light caressed the forest with care. Trying to revive the poor and suffering vegetation. The sky was still covered with the dark mantle, but each day that passed it softened and eventually would disappear providing a day in which plants and animals would repopulate the earth. Where food would not be a privilege and people would stop dying all over the planet because of hunger.
“Caleb,” Meryl whispered when she felt him hug her from behind.
“A world to know your thoughts?” Caleb teased.
“A lot of strange things have happened. I was thinking about the melodies of blood. It’s something strange that I cannot find an explanation for.”
“It’s good to have things like that. You can think that it is simply magic.”
“Magic doesn’t exist,” she said, “but it can be something similar, right? To leave your memories in the blood ... if you look at it, well, it’s something beautiful. Will you get used to living in the house?” Meryl worried, knowing what would be in his head.
“I admit I feel strange,” Caleb sighed, “the mansion makes me remember different memories and I realize just how much things have changed.”
“Or how much you’ve changed, Caleb.” Meryl turned around and placed her head on his chest. “I would like to say that we don’t deserve it, but to hell with that. Of course, we deserve it.”
“Thanks, Meryl.”
“Why?” Meryl was surprised. When she looked at him he was serene, and his red eyes shone brightly.
“For saving me,” he admitted almost like a wounded child.
“Silly, it was you who saved me.”
“No, Meryl. You have become strong all by yourself. You are no longer that weepy girl who was afraid of her own shadow. You killed Epsilon, who was your brother, you have saved us all and you have restored my trust in people.”
“Well let’s just say that we have saved each other. However, I have told you many times Caleb that you never stopped believing or having hope. You were just as determined.”
“Who knows ... Go back to bed. You need to rest,” Caleb urged her. “I’ll bring you dinner in a little while.”
“I’m fine, really. I’m still standing.”
“Meryl, I need you to recover soon. There are so many things to do,” Caleb added pushing her
to the bed. Meryl gave in with a sigh.
“The city can wait a few days.”
“I don’t mean the city, Meryl.” When they lay down, he covered her with a blanket. Before leaving he kissed her carefully. “Let’s say that the things I want to do are more intense and I need you strong for it.”
“Caleb!”
Embarrassed by what she had understood Meryl tried to lightly slap him, but he quickly moved away and winked at her before leaving. Meryl leaned back feeling the growing brightness of her cheeks and knew that a wonderful life waited for her in which, fortunately, there would be very special children running around the house. Yes, just imagining that future made her wish that it would arrive as soon as possible, because the last piece that Caleb’s heart needed to be totally complete, was precisely that one. And Meryl knew what she would do if a child arrived to provide that much-needed light. They would name him Alexander without a doubt, their special little Alexander.
The war engulfed the world and from its ashes will have to be reborn a new light.
