  Fairfax didn’t flinch.

  “Yes, I read that too. Silver linings, eh, Chief Inspector?”

  The two men shook hands, and the door closed.

  The Prime Minister returned to his desk, and picked up the phone.

  He pressed the button which activated his direct line to the Home Secretary.

  “Good morning Stephen. Yes, it is lovely, isn’t it? Listen, just a quick word in your perfectly formed ear about that new director of CI5. Yes, I’ve been thinking about our chat. We do need someone who is not afraid to rub people the wrong way. I know, we may live to regret having a loose cannon rolling all over the deck and all that, but I think young Switzerland is the man. There’s a hint of the George Cowley about him. Can you have a chat with the Committee?”

  The European Parliament today approved a plan by the European Commission to create a EU-wide version of the British National Companionship Agency. Addressing the Parliament in Strasbourg, the Commissioner responsible for the new EuroLove Agency, Margot Wallstrom of Sweden, suggested that “What the world needs now, is love, sweet love.”

  By a majority of 571 to 150, the Parliament agreed.
