Change of Heart (The True Heart Series Book 3) Page 22

by Layce Gardner

“How can you be so sure?” Susan asked. Every nerve in her body seemed to be twitching. She didn’t think she’d ever been this scared.

“I know because it’s meant to be.” Steph winked at her and walked away.

They left Susan alone. On a silly Valentine’s blanket. In a park. At midnight. She lay back on the blanket and took deep, even breaths. She was glad the night had cooled some, because otherwise she’d be pouring out buckets of anxiety-filled sweat.

She looked at the star-filled sky. It reminded her of being at camp, the exclusive rich girl camp on an island in Puget Sound, with her best friend Sally. They’d snuck out of their cabin and gone down to the beach where they looked up at the stars and imagined falling in love.

They made countless wishes upon the stars. Sally wished for a sensitive, small, and hairless man with impeccable taste in clothing. Susan wished for an auburn beauty, a Scottish queen with stunning green eyes, filled with kindness.

Sally had found her dream man. He owned a ranch in Colorado. He was the hairiest man Susan had ever seen and all he wore were boots, jeans, and cowboy shirts. Sally loved him madly.

Susan realized that Tess was her dream girl. She was the Scottish queen she had wished for over thirty years ago. How about that, she thought, wishes really do come true.

She closed her eyes and steadied her breathing. The next thing she knew, she opened her eyes to find Tess snuggled in next to her on the blanket. She stared into those lovely green eyes that were filled with kindness.

“You snuck up on me. I was supposed to watch you walk across the field and into my arms.”

Tess smiled. “I think this is better, don’t you?” She kissed Susan ardently.

“Tess… I love you so much and I’m so sorry that I didn’t tell you… I don’t love Carrie. I don’t want to be with her. It’s you I love. Please, believe me. It’s only you I want.”

Tess put a finger to Susan’s lips, stopping her. “That’s all I ever wanted to hear.”

  “Can I come back home?”

“Please,” Tess said. “Please come back.”

  They kissed.

“And I promise to do everything possible to make you happy,” Susan said.

“Being with you makes me happy.”

Susan tucked a loose strand of hair behind Tess’s ear and kissed her again. “I will love you always and forever.”

“And I promise to do the same.”

Susan knew right then that this was the wedding she was meant to have, in a park under a starlit night sky, with Tess’s arms wrapped around her and soft kisses on her lips. This was what she’d been waiting for—always and forever.

  They kissed passionately.

From out of the darkness, Susan and Tess heard a wolf whistle and several whoops of joy, followed by applause.

They turned and looked. Their friends stood in the parking lot, clapping and laughing.

“We just made their day,” Susan said.

“You have really weird friends,” Tess teased.

  “I know. Isn’t it wonderful?”
