She nodded as she tried to force the word “yes” from her lips. It came out breathy. “Yes. I will. I absolutely will. Because I love you and want to spend my life with you and Charlie.”
She stared at the ring on her finger and pressed her lips together tightly. Adam groaned as he stood and pulled her up with him, pressing his mouth to hers.
“I’m sorry I hurt you. I’m sorry I was an idiot.”
“I know. I’ve missed you. I didn’t know how I was going to say goodbye to Charlie today. Or survive seeing you.”
“I won’t ever make you feel like that again.”
She kissed his chin. “We’ll both make mistakes. But I won’t let you down. I know others have, and that’s part of why you built a wall around your heart. I won’t leave. You need to trust that.”
He nodded. “I do. And I’ll always do my best to give you a reason to want to stay.”
Her heart twisted and she took his face in her hands. “Adam, you are my reason. You and Charlie. You’re everything I need and want. You’re perfect.”
His smile stitched up the torn pieces of her heart. “Perfect for you.”
Epilogue
Megan smoothed down the satin skirt of her dress and looked in the mirror again. The knock on the door came right before Adam let himself into the room. He stopped, leaning against the closed door.
“Give me a minute. I need to just look at you,” he said, his eyes roaming over her, his gaze hungry.
Megan walked toward him and reached out to straighten his tie. “You look pretty good yourself.”
He leaned in, keeping his hands to himself as his mouth touched hers, gently, then more insistently. Pressing her body against his, she smiled against his lips when he groaned. “I came to tell you they’re ready,” he said, pulling back, his hands now on her waist.
“How’s Parks?” Megan asked.
“He’s pacing like Garrett is in labor,” Adam said. “But Charlie’s keeping him sane, I think. You look beautiful, Megan.”
Adam reached out to touch one of the curls that cascaded down from her chignon. “I can’t wait until it’s our turn. I can’t wait to call you my wife. I love you.”
Hearing it made her body hum. Adam told her several times a day how he felt about her and showed her every chance he got. Sometimes she thought his demonstrative behavior surprised him more than it did her. He’d been so certain he wasn’t cut out for the kind of love she wanted. Really, he’d just been scared. Once he knew her heart was as invested as his, the walls dropped, and he never missed the opportunity to share affection in words and deeds with both her and Charlie. She’d moved into the main house right after they’d made up, and Sue had moved into the carriage home at the end of summer. They had one week left before school began.
They’d all be starting fresh. Charlie would be in grade three at the same school he’d always attended. Megan would be teaching full time at his school, but not in his class. Adam had quit his job and would be starting his new one mid-September. They’d be married at Christmas.
But today was Parks and Garrett’s day, and she didn’t want to hold them up.
“I love you, Adam. I can’t wait to be your wife.” She leaned in to kiss him again. Just one kiss.
Another knock made her jump back before their lips could meet. Adam opened the door, and Charlie, wearing an adorable tux, looked up at them. “Come on. It’s time for Parker and Garrett to get married. Garrett says the best man has to make sure everything happens when it’s supposed to.” Charlie looked down at a black digital watch on his wrist and tapped it. He looked so much like Adam that Megan’s heart jumped.
“Sorry, bud. Megan just needed a kiss before we got going,” Adam said.
Megan gave him a mock-evil stare.
Charlie scrunched his nose up. “Ew. When you guys get married, are you gonna kiss all the time?”
Both Megan and Adam burst out laughing. “We’ll try to tone it down,” Megan said, unable to stop smiling.
Charlie looked up at her and extended his hand. “Nah. That’s okay. I’ll just close my eyes.”
Megan took his hand and bit her lip. Adam put a hand on her lower back and leaned closer, his breath brushing her ear as he whispered, “He might need to close his eyes a lot.”
Laughing, Megan shushed him and let Charlie lead her. He stopped and looked back at Adam, who was staring at them both intensely. “You okay, Dad?”
Adam nodded, holding Megan’s gaze. “Completely, bud. I’m absolutely perfect.”
