  All because a few people were hypnotised by profit and a Coroner didn’t want public embarrassment in his Court.

  Sheila, of course, had a different slant on it. ‘You know,’ she said, once we were in bed, ‘watching the English legal system at work is an experience of great value to a social historian. It’s like watching the nineteenth century come alive.’

  ‘Huh!’ I said. ‘In the nineteenth century trade unionists didn’t get to appear before Employment Tribunals. They got to appear at Assizes, who shipped them off to some unbelievably barbaric colony in the Pacific.’

  ‘Shut up and make love to me!’ she commanded. ‘It’s been ages.’

  ‘I’m a sick man. I’ve got a bad arm.’

  ‘Who needs arms?’ she asked, and proved her point.
