Late the next morning, the maid knocked on the door. She announced that breakfast was being served on the patio. After we showered and dressed, we proceeded to the patio. David was already there reading the paper. He mentioned he had to go to his office for several hours. I inquired as to where his office was located. It wasn’t too far from the hotel where I was staying. I asked him if he would mind giving me a ride. He smiled. He said he would be honored.
After breakfast, I thanked Margaret for a great time and for being a wonderful host. David and I began our drive back to the city.
After a week at the hotel, I was beginning to get cabin fever. I decided to purchase a car. I had a feeling I wasn’t going back to New York any time in the near future. I had a strong feeling my career was going to be in the film industry. I purchased a copy of the Los Angelis Times. I searched for car dealerships. There was one a few blocks from the hotel that specialized in sports cars. Four hours later, I drove my new Porsche back to the hotel.
When I got back to my room, I made two telephone calls. One was to Jenny. I wanted to check on her and the house. When Jenny answered the phone, I told how much I missed her. I invited her out once the previews of the film were announced. In the back of my mind, my plan was to move Jenny to California. I could break up the house in Brooklyn into apartments. I would keep one for myself. It would be available when I was in New York. After I told Jenny how much I missed her again, I hung up.
My next call was to Mr. Golden. I had the number where he was editing the film. When he answered, I inquired about how the film was progressing. He said so far, so good. "It’s going to be wonderful. You are going to be wonderful. The character you created is dominating the film. It has Academy Award written all over it,” he said.
"What about Margaret?” I cautiously asked.
"She’s good,” he said. "But your performance was better.”
If I get a nomination for the film and Margaret doesn’t, that could ruin our friendship. After thinking about it for a minute, that was a problem from the beginning. There is only one award for "Best Actress” in a film. They could nominate both of us, but only one of us could win.
I asked Mr. Golden if I could come out to the studio tomorrow. I wanted to watch him edit. I promised I wouldn’t get in the way. I was just curious. He told me to come to the studio about eleven o’clock.
When I hung up the phone from Mr. Golden, I was extremely excited. I wanted to do something daring for the evening. I wanted to let off some pent up energy. I decided to kill two birds with one proverbial stone. I looked through the paper. I saw an advertisement for a gay club. There was an address. I went to the clerk on the hotel desk. I showed him the advertisement. I inquired if he could direct me to that address. He pulled out a copy a city map from under the desk. With a red pen, he drew a line from the hotel to the club. His directions were uncomplicated. There was only one turn.
I got showered and dressed. I had dinner at the hotel restaurant. Around nine-thirty, I drove to the club. There was parking in back of the building. When I entered, there were steps that led down to a large room. The music was very loud. It was also very dark and crowded. I made my way to the bar. I ordered a glass of wine.
A middle aged man was standing next to me. He was wearing what I estimated to be a thousand dollar suit. I was feeling bold. I decided to strike up a conversation with him. "Is this your first time at the club?” I asked. He looked at me with a certain amount of bewilderment.
After he realized I was addressing him he said, "Yes, I don’t have much time for recreation. My business takes up most of my time,” he told me.
"This is my first time too. I decided to check the place out. I was curious,” I said. He took a long pause and then took some time to look me over.
Then he said, "Are you a lesbian?” he frankly inquired.
I countered with, "Are you gay?”
He smiled. Then he said, "Only part of the time.”
"Me too,” I said.
He kept staring at me. Then he said, "Would you want to get out of here. Maybe we could go some quieter place where we can talk?”
I hesitated for a few seconds. This guy could be a serial killer for all I know. Should I leave with him? "What is your name?” I asked.
Without hesitation, he said, "Michael Andes. What’s yours?” he inquired.
"My name is Androgyny. I’m a film actress.” I took a short pause. "What kind of business are you in?” He took out his wallet and showed me a picture ID for the film studio where I just finished shooting. "This is ironic. I just finished shooting a film there. What is it you do exactly?”
"I’m an assistant producer. I oversee the cost side of making a film. Sometimes, I get involved in distribution,” he told me with some authority.
I decided that he wasn’t a serial killer. So I said, "I’m ready to leave if you are.” I put ten dollars on the bar for my wine. We went up the stairs together. When we reached the street, I asked, "Where do you want to go?” He suggested we go to his house. He lived in the direction of the studio. He had his car parked on the same parking lot as mine. He got into his car and instructed me to follow him.
We drove several miles until he turned into a very long driveway. The studio was only about a mile away. At the end of the driveway, there was a beautiful house on top of the hill. We parked the cars in back of the house.
"I’ll give you the grand tour,” he said.
The house was very expensively furnished. I counted the number of rooms. There were twenty-one. We ended the tour on the patio. There was an Olympic-size pool and an incredible view of the city. One of his staff approached us as we were sitting there. He inquired what we would like to drink.
"I’ll have a gin and tonic,” he said. "Get the young lady a glass of white wine.”
He remembered what I was drinking at the club. Within a few minutes, his butler, James, returned with the drinks. I raised my glass. "To making a new friend,” I toasted.
He raised his glass as well and said, "To making a new friend.”
I began to ask him some personal questions. "Have you always lived here alone?”
He took a sip of his drink. Then he said, "I bought this house several years ago. I was planning to get married. My fiancé discovered that I was bisexual and she cancelled the engagement. So, to answer your question, yes, I’ve always lived here alone.”
I’ve only known Michael for two hours, but the thought occurred to me he might be the one I’m looking for. We have a lot in common. We’re both bisexual. We work in the same industry. We would understand each other’s needs. Establishing a relationship with him was going to become one of my missions. "May I ask you a personal question, Michael?”
"Yes, of course. What is your question?”
"How old are you?” I inquired
He took a moment to digest my question. "I’m a lot older than you,” he smiled. "I’m three days away from my forty-fourth birthday. May I ask your age, if I may be so bold?”
"I’m twenty-four going on twenty-five in two months,” I replied. We sat quietly for a few minutes. Since we were getting personal, I wanted to know more. "Are you seeing anyone now?”
"I had one young man until a few months ago. I think he was seeing me for the gifts I flourished on him. I haven’t had a woman in my life since my fiancé called off the wedding,” he said with certain dejection. Then he reversed the interrogation. "What about you? Do you have anyone special?”
"Yes, there is someone special. Her name is Jenny. She lives in New York. She’s a theater student. I’ve been considering moving her out here after she graduates.” I looked at my watch. It was after midnight. "I should be going. I’m meeting with the director of my film tomorrow morning. I’m going to observe the editing process.”
He pulled out a pen and notebook. "I’m going to write down my home and office phone numbers. Maybe we can have lunch tomorrow,” he said.
I pulled off the end of the paper he had handed me. I wrote
my phone number at the hotel. This is my temporary number. I’m staying in a hotel downtown.” He took the piece of paper and put it in his pocket. I was wondering if he was thinking the same thing as me. We would be a perfect match. We wouldn’t have to be in love at first. I was sure after we lived together for a period of time, it would happen. He walked me to my car and kissed me on the cheek before I got in. I drove away.
The next morning, I got to see how the editing process worked. I called Michael at his office. I suggested we have dinner. He was agreeable.
That dinner turned into many dinners. The film was previewed. It received rave reviews. Before it even distributed nationally, I was getting several offers from producers and directors. I had hired the agent Mr. Golden had recommended. Margaret and I were both nominated. But I received the Academy Award for "Best Actress.” I was right about Margaret abandoning our friendship. She wouldn’t talk to me after I received the award. I didn’t care. It was the nature of the business.
Conclusion
After a courtship of two years, Michael and I were married. I moved Jenny out to Hollywood. She moved in with Michael and me. I even shared her with Michael from time to time. Michael and Jenny developed a symbiotic relationship. Jenny liked having anal sex. Michael enjoyed giving it to her. Due to Michael’s homosexual activities, Jenny and I were always careful when we had sex with him. We would insist that he always use condoms when he would take one or both of us to bed.
Jenny got several supporting film roles. When I would be contracted to do a film, if there was a supporting part that Jenny could play, I would insist that it be given to her.
Ten years into my career, I was signed to do the lead in an epic drama to be filmed in Africa by a leading director. When I arrived on location, I discovered to my delight that my leading man was going to be none other than Colin. We hadn’t seen each other since we had that threesome in New York.
It was wonderful working with Colin. He was such a talented actor. We picked up sexually where we left off in New York all those years ago. Reuniting my relationship with Colin, made the time I was required to spend in Africa more tolerable than it would have been otherwise.
Colin was now living in Hollywood. He had purchased one of those celebrity houses that Margaret showed me when I first came to California. After a year of filming, we went back to the States. Colin had Jenny and me over for dinner. Jenny was delighted to see him. She talked about him all the time. She had a crush on him, but would never admit it to me. Colin, Jenny and I would get together for threesomes on a regular basis. Of course, Colin and I would have our time alone as well. I introduced Colin to Michael. Since Michael and I had an open relationship, he accepted the fact that I was sleeping with Colin on occasion.
The years passed by quickly, too quickly, I might add. As of this writing, I am in my late forties. As Mr. Golden had predicted, I have become a household name. I have become a very wealthy woman on my own. I didn’t have to depend on my mother’s money after that first film.
Michael died a year ago. He had contracted AIDS from his extracurricular activities as he referred to them. I was always harping for him to be careful. When I had sex with a man, I would always insist that condoms be used.
Michael left me his entire estate. Between my money and the money left to me by Michael, Jenny and I would live very comfortably well into our old age.
It’s been a good life so far; I wouldn’t change a day of it.
