She grinned. “I’m not exactly patient, myself.”

His expression sobered. “The problem is, I may not have a job after what happened—”

“You could always work with me at the store.”

“Gardening? You know how good I am at that.”

She pretended to consider. “You could take up writing.”

He laughed, coughed a little and sank back on his pillow. “Not a chance.”

She brushed a kiss to his lips. “Adam, no matter what happens to your job, we’ll make it as long as we’re together.” Behind her, she heard someone enter the room.

“He doesn’t have to worry about a job,” Christina said. “Tom Dodge has already been on the phone with What’s-His-Name.” She smiled at Adam and held out her hand as she approached the bed. “Tom’s intelligent enough to recognize what you did, and he’s not the type to fire you for going beyond the call of duty.” Her expression sobered. “You saved my daughter’s life, Mr. McAllister. And my granddaughter’s. Tom knows that. I know it. But making you put up with me for a mother-in-law may not seem like much of a reward.”

Adam took her hand and worked an arm around DJ’s waist. “I’ll chance it.”

DJ leaned into his embrace and smiled into her mother’s eyes. For just a moment, she thought of Larry Galloway. If it hadn’t been for him, she would never have met Adam. She marveled that the worst thing she could have imagined in her life had brought about the best thing ever to happen to her.

Adam tightened his arm around her waist and brushed a kiss across her lips. Her mother gently touched her hand with her fingers. And slowly, surely, DJ’s world tipped back into balance.
