One Lick Page 8

“Aw, shit. She’s already talking about bringing the mother-in-law to stay with us,” joked Eric. He unhooked her hand from behind his neck then pressed a kiss to her wrist. “Just kidding.”

“Uh-huh.” Yet she smiled, letting him know he was forgiven. “Just change me, will you? I want to become a white tigress. Ooh, tigress. I do like the sound of that.”

They exchanged a long look. Garron sat up, bringing her along with him. “Fine. It’ll be rough, but here’s how it goes. We’ll bite you. When we do, you’ll get part of our blood inside you. That’s what will change you. It’s going to hurt like hell and you’ll have two days of pain and fitful sleeping off and on. But at the end of it, you’ll be one of us.”

“When we bite you, you’re going to want to fight us off, but by that point, we have to continue. Do you understand?” Eric slid his fingers along her arm.

Was he searching for the best place to sink his fangs into?

She’d never been very good with pain, but becoming a weretigress would be worth it. “Do it.”

“Okay, baby. Just remember I love you.”

  “We love you.”

“And I love you two. Now get on with it.”

Another look went between them. Then their mouths drew back to reveal deadly fangs. Alarm flared in her, but she summoned her courage and turned her head to the side. “I’m ready.”

Pain seared into her neck and arm. Instinct kicked in and she tried to fight them just as they said she would. The world went sideways as colors dimmed then changed to amber. She let out a silent scream, her body jerking.

When the darkness started filtering in, she welcomed it.

  Epilogue

“Eric, I swear to God, if you don’t get moving, I’m going to tie your tail in a knot.” Jane hurried down the sidewalk toward the Jeep. “It’s bad enough I had to track you two down at Roar.”

Garron stayed in step with her while Eric lagged behind. She was already behind in her preparations for the night’s dinner.

“What’s the big deal?” complained Eric. “It’s only your aunt and uncles coming.”

She kept moving, turning in a circle as she spoke. “And they’re not important enough to put a good meal on the table?” She winked at Garron.

During their first month of living together on their ranch, she’d learned many things. After two horrible days and nights, her body had transformed from human to shifter. At first, she’d been terrified that she’d made the decision too quickly, without thinking it through enough. But once the pain had gone, once she’d made it through her first transformation and had run under the stars with the loves of her lives, she knew she’d finally become what she was meant to be. She was a weretigress and loving it.

Now she felt totally alive and strong. Having a shifter’s powers was a rush. Not only could she see and hear better than her human counterparts, she could run faster and was stronger than most grown human males.

She’d also learned more about the men she loved. Having the connection to bring them together hadn’t meant there weren’t a lot of adjustments to be made. She’d moved out of her high rise condo in Atlanta into the old house on their small ranch and had immediately started renovations. Who could live with only one bathroom anyway? She’d had to learn their likes and dislikes just as they’d had to learn hers. They’d had their fair share of squabbles, but thanks to the connection, they always came back together. Usually in bed.

She’d also fallen in love with the lifestyle and laid back community of Twisted. She’d only wished she’d visited her aunt sooner. The day she’d come to the small Texas town was the day she’d really started living. Soon enough, their efforts to start a family would pay off.

What would being a mother be like? What would being a mother to a weretiger be like?

She couldn’t wait to find out.

“Hey, take a look over there.” Garron inclined his head to a threesome in front of Mercy’s Market.

A young woman was backed against the wall by Cane and Alec Butler. The men were doing a hard press for her as they leaned forward. Although the girl’s expression showed she was nervous, the way she twirled her hair around her finger showed she was also interested.

“I think the connection must be at work again.”

She glanced at Eric then back at the girl. “Do you think so? Do either of you know her?”

“Yes to the first and no to the second.” Garron took her hand and tugged her toward the Jeep. “I thought we needed to hurry.”

“We do.” She allowed him to lead her, but kept her attention glued to the girl.

Garron opened the car door and ushered her onto her seat before getting behind the wheel. She shifted around to keep watching.

“Do you want to welcome her to Twisted?”

She heard Eric’s teasing tone, but ignored it.

“You could question her and get all her details then call everyone you know.”

“Very funny, tiger-man.” She wouldn’t tell him that she’d had the same idea. Instead, she’d wait to hear from Lena. If anyone knew anything about the new girl in town, it would be Lena. “Let’s get going.”

Forcing herself to face front, she quipped, “I wonder if they’ve licked her yet.”

“If they have, then she’ll be around long enough for you to ask her all your questions and more.” Garron pulled the truck onto the road.

She laughed and hugged Eric’s arm. “You’ve got that right. After all, one lick is all it takes.”
