The girl swayed to the music and hummed along. Whatever her name was, Mitch was relatively certain she had been the daughter of one of their neighbors who escaped with his wife while she was pregnant with the babe. Of course, the Tudra couldn’t let them go. No, they hunted them down and slaughtered them, but not before her parent’s had the foresight to drop her off at a daycare and leave her to the human system. Anything was better than a young girl in the hands of the Tudra, and anyone from the old council.

The duet drew to a close and when the cellist looked up, the girl screamed…

  “Daddy!”

The half million-dollar cello hit the floor and Michael flew up the aisle. “Alexa!” Michael fell to his knees and drew his daughter into his arms. “I thought…I thought she was dead.” He buried his face in her neck and he cried.

Melody walked up with a smile, tears shining in her eyes. “No wonder he always acted like such a jerk. He missed his baby.”

Mitch smiled down at her. “We brought her home for you, but I see she’s in good hands.”

Melody gave them both a kiss, then walked back up the aisle and onto the stage. “Attention, everyone. The rest of the music class is cancelled for the day. You may go outside and have a recess if you want. Just don’t be late for your next class.”

The kids stood and scrambled for the door as though they were afraid she would change her mind and call them back.

She turned back to them and gave them both a smile. Wyatt felt that same familiar wrenching in the vicinity of his heart that he always felt when she smiled at him like that. He rubbed the center of his chest and thanked the gods that he and Mitch had brought her here. Without her, there would be no more light for them here, no more happiness. She was their music, their song, their Melody in Paradise.
