Sky had to smile at the look of amazement on AJ’s face.

  “Uh, sure. Go ahead.”

The Texan leaned down and put his arm around AJ’s shoulders, while his wife whipped out her cell phone and clicked away.

“Thanks, AJ, and good luck to you this season.” The man and his wife retreated to their table.

“Guess you’d better get used to being a celebrity, Augie,” Sky grinned.

He shrugged. “That will only last until I lose my first game. Then the fans will be throwing tomatoes instead of lining up for pictures.” His smile faded. “Today’s a day for all sorts of surprises.” He took an envelope out of his pocket and pushed it across the table to Sky. “You made quite an impression last night.”

Sky frowned. “I don’t understand.” She picked up the envelope that had only AJ’s name scrawled across the front of it.

  “Read it,” he encouraged her.

Sky unfolded the single sheet of paper inside. There was no salutation.

“I’ve withdrawn my investment in the Bucks. Zeke and his partners wanted no suggestion that my money influenced them to sign you for their team. They think you’ll go far. If stubborn, pig-headed determination counts, they’ll be right.

“The contract on your mother’s house has been modified to reflect a deduction in the same amount you wired into my account on Friday. With the money from the sale of that fancy car you loved, you’ll own it free and clear.

“You and your father both did one thing right, much as it pains me to say it, you both married smart women. Beauty and brains is a rare combination, and that feisty lady of yours has both in spades. She made me take a closer look at the future.

“I don’t expect us to become friends. Too much water under the bridge for that. I wouldn’t mind reading a bedtime story to my first great-grandchild before I die though, so you’d best get crackin’.”

There was no signature, but the letter hardly needed one.

Sky looked up at AJ, more than a little stunned.

He reached across the table and took her hand. His smile was brilliant. “A new career and a fiancée all in one week. I’d say that’s the sweetest double play ever.”
