Madison Johns - Agnes Barton 07 - High Seas Honeymoon Page 18

  “What tape?”

“We hid a recording device in your sandal.”

“This is why nobody trusts the government,” I said, irritated. “But how did you even know that it would play out like it did?”

“Honestly, we weren’t sure, but we’re willing to give you a reward for finding the money. Your son insisted upon that.”

I shook my head and Andrew’s jaw was tight as he said, “It would have been nice if you’d have shared information with us. Agnes and Eleanor almost lost their lives.”

“Why didn’t you show up to save the day before I almost fell off the ship?” I asked.

“We would have, but we couldn’t find you. We thought that you were downstairs, not on the deck,” Liz said.

“But what about the tape?” Andrew asked. “That should have helped you.”

“It did, but it took longer to find out what part of the deck they were on. I’m sorry it took so long,” Liz said.

“If you’re an FBI agent, Brady, how did Kacey get your gun away from you so easily?”

“That was totally unexpected. I didn’t think she’d do that, I was trying to stall until the other agents got here.”

Obviously, Brady needed to brush up on his skills, I thought.

Andrew was quite angry and led Eleanor and me into the atrium, where it was standing room only. Mr. Wilson rolled his scooter forward and Eleanor ran to him, giving him a big hug and kiss.

Captain Hamilton pulled me aside and told me that the hot tub did indeed have an electrical issue that most likely led to the death of Ricky and Leo. I was relieved that Leah hadn’t been involved. She had been through enough. I thanked the captain for sharing the information, but kept it to myself. I certainly didn’t want to cause him any trouble since he was really very helpful in our case, even if he didn’t know it. I also told him how Kacey had stolen the master key from Officer Barber that first day so hopefully the captain would be too mad at him from losing the key.

When she glanced up, Ruby stepped forward. “I’m sorry I caused you any problems, Eleanor. I can see now that you and Mr. Wilson really do love each other. I don’t know why I was acting like I did. I’m just a bitter old lonely woman.”

“You don’t have to be,” Eleanor said. “There are plenty of widowers out there, eager for the picking.”

The crowd surrounded us, asking for details about how we almost lost our lives bringing down Kacey and finding the money, too, in the process. It was many hours before we were able to get back to our room as every time we tried, party people danced us around the deck until the wee hours of the morning. While I was dead tired after our day, when sunrise came, it was so breathtaking that I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it. On the horizon were oranges and yellows as far as the eye could see, and when the sun was rising, it appeared to be coming out of the ocean itself. Andrew came up behind me and slid his arms around me, resting his head on my neck. While I didn’t expect to have such an eventful honeymoon, I was certainly on it with the right person. I wasn’t sure what tomorrow would hold, but I’d face each of my days wrapped in Andrew’s tight embrace.
