“Me and Jamie, we’re going to leave here, and you’re not going to do a thing about it. You move your ass out of the way and I’ll tell you where the others are.” The man shook his head and said no dice. “Then you’re going to be responsible for this woman’s life, as well as the other children that I have stashed.”

“Fourteen twenty-four Market Street. There are seven kids there, all of them of varying ages under ten. You, mother fucker, are going to wish you’d never have been born when I’m done with you. Let the broad go, and you and I will just shoot each other until you’re dead.”

Jamie was getting mighty tired of this guy treating her like she wasn’t anything but someone in his way. When she stomped her foot down on the top of Ben’s foot, she heard the gun go off and the sting of something cutting her across her cheek. When she turned back to Ben, to.... Well, she wasn’t sure what she was going to say to him, but it didn’t matter. He was lying on the floor with a hole in his forehead. The other man touched her arm.

Jamie wasn’t the violent type. She’d had enough of that during her childhood to know that fists never solved anything. But before she could think about the man’s size and that he still had a gun in his hand, she doubled up her fist and hit him right in his face. As he went down, she had a moment of fear, then she was pissed again.

“Get up.” He said he was fine where he was. “No you’re not. I want you to get up off that floor so that I can hit you again. You mother fucker, you told him to kill me. Then you...you...called me a broad. Then you...then you—”

Her belly lurched up and she leaned over and threw up twice before she could think that she was safe, and that the man on the floor was still in the room with her. When he stood up, she did the only thing she could think of and hit him again. This time in the balls.

The police seemed to be everywhere then. Jamie didn’t think the man had even hit the floor again when she was being shoved up against the wall and cuffs put on her. All this for hitting that man that said it was all right with him if she was dead?

Jamie was asked her name and she told them she was James Fitzpatrick. When asked if she knew that was a man’s name, she looked at the officer and asked him if he’d like his balls around his throat too. He stepped back from her when she struggled to do just that. She’d had enough of men for one day.

“Yes, I’m well aware that it’s a man’s name. It’s been with me my whole life, you moron.” The woman’s laughter had her looking at the doorway. “Oh look, another broad that can be killed because that piece of shit has some sort of quota to fill.”

“You’re mouthy.” He didn’t look like he was pissed off any longer but told the cop to let her go. “If you don’t, then I’m going to sic Lauren on you.” The growl, loud and clear in the room, made her skin warm and her body respond. But not in a frightened way.

They didn’t move. She was still sitting on the floor when the woman asked the man what was wrong with him. They both looked at her after they spoke quietly for a minute. Before she could ask what the hell they were talking about, the first baby was brought out of the passage way. Jamie went to mush, just like that.

“I said to let her go. I’m not going to tell you again.”

Jamie looked at the big man, and she could swear that he’d gotten bigger. When no one moved still, she watched in horrific fascination as he shifted into the most beautiful creature she’d ever seen. Then his intent seemed to come to her. He was going to kill the cops.

Standing up while cuffed was harder than she’d thought it would be. Pushing her body between the dragon and the cops, she told him that she was going to murder him in his sleep if he harmed one more person today.

“Shift back to your other hulking self. You heard me. Right now.” He didn’t move, and she rammed her head into his belly before staggering back from it. “You’re a bully and an asshole, and I said to shift back to the man. At least him I can talk to.”

When the dragon licked his large fucking tongue over her cheek, she nearly came. It was the strangest feeling that she’d ever had. But he changed back to himself and stood there looking at her.

“You were going to kill those men.” He said that he still might. “No you will not. If you can’t behave yourself, then go into the hallway. I’ve had enough men bossing me around today. And you’re still on my shit list.”

The woman continued to laugh. Jamie didn’t have any idea what the hell she found so funny, but she was distracted by the next two men that came into the room. They were related to the first man, and she’d just bet anything they were just as bossy. Suddenly she was free of the cuffs, and she looked at the three men.

They swallowed up the space in the room. And she’d bet any amount of money when people said for them to do something they did it. Jamie didn’t have any delusions about the woman either. She just commanded authority.

The last few minutes caught up with her then. Sitting down on the floor she’d just gotten up from, Jamie saw the blood as it pooled under Ben’s head. There was a lot, her scattered mind told her, and she looked at the man again. She couldn’t seem to focus. And when someone asked her if she was all right, Jamie fell back and let darkness take her. Her last thought before she lost her grip was that she hoped to never see the man again.
