“That’s a pretty tall order.” One she’d never been able to fill on her own, but now, with his help, his guidance and his love, she could.
“I know, and I may not be able to do it all, but I want to try. And I want to spend whatever time we have on this earth together.”
“So what happens if I’m positive? I won’t be able to give you children, and you so deserve to be a father.” Her voice had gone soft, fear filling it again.
“And you deserve to be a mother. I’ve seen you with Alejandro, and I know you would love to have your own. I know. But there’s more than one way to be a parent. And that’s more important than having a pregnancy, isn’t it?”
Rebel wrapped her arms around him, feeling like there was hope for her future. “Yes, yes, it is.” She took in a deep breath and huffed out the remaining doubts and uncertainty. “If you’ll be with me and help me, I can be strong enough to find out the truth.”
“You’re already stronger than you know.” He stroked her cheek. “And I’ll be with you every step of the way.”
EPILOGUE
TROPICAL BREEZES HEAVY with the smell of the ocean and flowers surrounded Rebel. She emerged from the small commercial plane and was enveloped by the welcoming arms of Jamaica. This was something she’d never imagined, stepping out into such paradise. Now that she’d received the test results, life could go on. Beautifully, peacefully.
She did not carry the gene, as she’d thought she did. She’d been able to tell her mother the wonderful information on her wedding day. What a joy that had been, to be reunited with her mother, introduce her to a huge new family, and share the perfect news of being negative, all in one brilliant day.
“You were so right to tell me I was nuts.”
“I never said that.” He looked at her over his aviator sunglasses as he had when she’d flown with him for the first time.
“When we first met and I told you Jamaica was on my bucket list. You didn’t say it quite that way, but you inferred it.” She smiled up at him. “And you were right. This is unbelievable. We haven’t even left the airport and I’m speechless.”
Duncan stopped and placed a well-deserved kiss on her lips, then took her by the hand and led the way through the airport. “Our luggage will be delivered to the bungalow, there will be fresh fruit on the table when we get there, with a bottle of rum and a lovely breeze bringing the smell of the ocean through the windows.”
“It sounds heavenly.” As she let him lead her through the colorful airport, the sun glinted off the ring on her left hand. It was a plain silver band, but she hadn’t wanted anything else, much to Duncan’s disappointment. What was the use of having money if he didn’t spend some of it on her? She’d said he could spend the money on making memories with her, rather than on a sparkly token. He’d taken her at her word and booked the honeymoon trip immediately.
“It is.” He kissed her hand then pulled her closer for another kiss. “Just like you.”
“My birth-control implant runs out in another few months. Maybe we should think about baby-making.” That was another thing she’d never considered before meeting Duncan. But now life had opened up into a new world since meeting him.
“It takes more than thinking to make babies.” He smiled. “While we’re here in Jamaica, I think we could work on perfecting our technique, so when the time comes we’ll have it down pat.”
She laughed, feeling freer than she’d thought she’d ever be, more loved than she’d ever thought possible, and happier than she’d ever thought she could be.
“Thank you, Duncan McFee.” How else could she put it? She was grateful for his presence in her life and for the joy he gave her every moment of the day.
“For what?” He stopped and other people in the airport just moved around them, as if accustomed to lovers stopping spontaneously.
“For loving me.” Tears distorted her vision, and she happily blinked them away.
“Always.” He put an arm around her shoulders and drew her close against his body, then led her out into paradise.
