Anton laughed out loud. “Ma, you ain’t about to fight nobody. Sit down and quit acting so crazy.”
Gwen was serious, but decided to change the subject. “Have you heard anything about the results from your sister yet?”
“Not yet, but I’m sure we should hear something soon.” Anton replied.
The receptionist behind the desk finally handed Gwen her appointment card. “We’ll see you next month.” She nicely said.
“’Bout damn time with y’all slow asses,” Gwen told her with a roll of the eyes while snatching the card and quickly walking off. “Okay son, I’ll be there soon.” She said and before Anton could respond, she ended their call.
Gwen felt like she couldn’t get out of the hospital fast enough. If she never had to come back, she wouldn’t be mad. Just as she made it to the exiting doors, a woman called her.
“Heyyyy,” the nurse called out.
Gwen slowly turned around to see if the woman was talking to her. “Yeah,” she responded. As the nurse walked closer to her Gwen realized who it was. Damn, she thought.
“Hey, I just wanted to say that I was sorry for your loss.” The nurse told her.
“Thank you.” Gwen said then attempted to walk off.
“I know that it was hard to see your son hold on for so long, and then pass away like that. I just want you to know that I’ve prayed for you and your family.”
“Thank you,” Gwen said with a fake smile. “Now, if you’ll excuse me. I gotta go.” Gwen quickly made her exit out of the hospital. Seeing that nurse was the last person she expected to run into. Her stomach started turning as she thought about the events that led up to Slim’s death.
“You had to do it, Gwen. Don’t start feeling bad about it now.” She coached herself. In the back of her mind, pretending to be Slim’s mom so that she had access to his room, and then ultimately pulling the plug on him was the best thing for everyone. There was no way that she was about to let Slim identify her son in anything and she sure as hell wasn’t going to let anyone destroy her family. She’d played a big part in making sure that things worked out in their favor. Now all she had to do was keep her face clean and make sure that Anthony doesn’t tell Anton that he’s his father. That could certainly complicate things between she and her son once he learns the whole truth behind their relationship and she wasn’t having that.
“He better keep his mouth closed or else he’ll be visiting his sisters and his nephew way before time.” She said just above a whisper. Minutes later, she flagged down a cab and got inside of it. As the car pulled off, she stared out of the window. She looked down at her phone as an incoming text message came through. She then opened up the text message and immediately smiled.
The baby is Troy’s. & it’s a girl. (smiley face) Red
Gwen was elated. Finally, her daughter was going to be happy and in her mind she thought to herself... And, it was all worth it.
