Divided (The Orphans Book 6) Page 31

The two rushed down the steps, diving at Shaun, who jumped up onto the railing and above where they were soaring to. He came down on one of their heads with enough force to crush their skull. The second slid to a stop, getting on all fours, and came rushing towards him. Shaun jumped just before it could grab him, holding onto its shoulder and bringing the tanto blade down into its skull to the hilt of the blade.

Shaun pulled out the blades and unwound the chain. He looked up at Brandy, who was shaking her head in the moonlight. “I thought you were dead. Do you have any idea how hot that was?”

“I didn’t have much of a spectator seat, but I’m guessing pretty good, huh?”

She nodded slowly, looking like she might tear him apart. The sound of the dead echoed up at them and they knew that they were not far away from a second round of attacks. “I need to get you somewhere that we can clean that wound. We aren’t going to be able to keep this run of luck up forever. If I fired off the rifle in here they are going to be on us like stink on shit.”

One suddenly came around a corner, practically tight rope walking on the railing right past Shaun. He spun the chain, sending it around the thing’s neck and pulling it backwards from its bloodthirsty quest towards Brandy. It fell off balance and over the railing, hitting its face in between the two stairwells. Shaun switched his sword to his good hand, and when two came up, he leapt into the two of them, knocking one into the other. He sprinted down the stairs, landing on its chest and bringing the knife down into it.

Brandy was done waiting and when she came up, the fresh blood pumping from her leg wound was evident. Shaun tried to take out the second one, but it pushed him and the now immobile dead off of itself and into the wall. He dropped his blade and it slipped to the edge of the steps, rolling away. He went to get it but a horde came around the corner, seeing him and picking up their speed. Shaun pulled his pistol, aiming and not thinking. He fired off a full magazine, dropping twelve of them and hitting empty.

“Get your ass up, Shaun, now! You can load in a minute! Come on, get movin’!”

Shaun hit the release and dropped the magazine, running the steps. Brandy hobbled to keep up but started to fall behind. When he saw maintenance on a sign, he pulled her that way. They ripped the door open and he slid in a fresh magazine. He hit high flashlight, looking around, and found a roll of duct tape and bleach. Brandy didn’t even let him think of it before she declared, “You pour bleach in my wound and I’ll nail you in the balls. That shit is toxic!”

“I get it.” He wound a roll of duct tape around it until the blood was no longer seeping through. “I’m going to wrap it up real quick, just sit still and don’t move.”

When Shaun was done, he pulled the cap off of the bleach and let it soak her leg. “We needed to kill that scent so we can get out of here. We still need to find that damn pharmacy, and I need to get my stuff back.”

She went to hand him hers and realized they were both gone as well. “I don’t know what happened, they must have fallen. What are we going to do?”

  “Resort to firearms, I guess.”

He gave her his pistol and he checked his rifle to make sure that he was locked, and cocked, ready to rock. He kicked the door open but saw that there were at least a dozen on the outside of the door. He said, “Get back, I’ve got a horrible idea.”

She did as told and he held the gun up on full auto and peppered it, aiming where he guessed best that they would be. The screams that came from the other side of the door were a good sign that he was hitting them. He let the magazine hit the floor, reloaded, and the two made their way out.

They sprinted to the third floor and when he heard them coming, Shaun let her go ahead, unloading one last magazine. When he went to get another, all he felt was a water bottle. He took the bag off, letting it hit the floor, and saw a hole in the bag. He figured it had probably saved his life, for there was a hole in it and not his back. He thought of the dead trying to get it and realized there was a very strong chance whatever was trying to get him was hoping for something warm and not a cold magazine. He shouldered the rifle again, knowing it was now nothing but a heavy baseball bat right now.

  Brandy said, “What’s wrong?”

  “A lot. Get moving.”

They made it to the third floor, running and looking for an open door that would hold up against the dead. They were on their ass and Shaun found one that he trusted. He shoved Brandy in there before they could see him do it and screamed, “Lock the fucking door!”

He kept running, screaming, “Come on you mother fuckers, come get me! You know you want it!”

Shaun ran around a corner and through an office. He slammed the door shut and locked it behind him. He found a metal desk and cringed as it squeaked and scraped, making nails on a chalkboard sounds as he did so. But when he got it in place, it was flush against the door, and for the moment, he was safe. Shaun saw that there was a second door and he ran to shut it and secure it as well. Over time, he hoped—no, he prayed to a God he barely could believe in—that they would get bored or something more enjoyable would come along and be an easier meal.

Shaun walked around the corner, out of breath, out of bullets, and on his last ounce of energy. He refused to go back to Mr. Li without the medicine he needed. He did not want to let down the others. They still needed him, and he knew there was much left to learn.

A shadow came from behind the wall. Shaun waited, holding his breath, not daring to say anything. He waited, looking for something—anything—that he could use for a weapon. There was nothing to be used, nothing at all. The shadow grew larger as it got closer. Shaun was ready to take it on with his bare hands if it meant he could survive to fight another day.

It came from around the corner. It stumbled, barely able to walk. Blood covered its face, its eyes bleeding, and a large gash travelled down its arm. It was trying to walk, but looked like it was going through the change—through the turn—and Shaun knew what was next for him if he did not find something to kill it.

It ran for Shaun, but he had nowhere to go.
