Love Song Page 27

I took a breath, stepped up to it, and opened my mouth. And my words soared.

  35

“That was amazing,” Nikki repeated for what had to be the ten thousandth time.

Dion groaned. “Nik, that’s, like, the ten thousandth time you’ve said that.”

“It bears repeating, Dion,” she snapped back.

“You guys rocked, end of story,” he said, leaning back on the stool behind the small drum set wedged in Rafe’s music room. “Now can we go home and get some sleep? We have a flight tomorrow.”

“I’m way too jazzed to sleep,” Nikki said, bouncing from her perch on Dion’s lap.

Dion’s eyes popped open. “Even better reason to get home.” He launched himself to his feet, hands on her ass, pushing her up with him. “We want to hear all about the offers when we get home. Later.”

“Bye!” Nikki called out around her giggles as Dion dragged her out of the room.

“Have a great trip!” I called after them. The front door slammed shut.

“So… are you too jazzed to sleep?” Rafe asked.

“Definitely,” I said, snuggling into him as we sat shoulder to shoulder on the piano bench.

Rafe was right. We just needed that one song to bring down the house. Bobby was beside himself as the artist reps had stormed him at his banquette. According to Rafe, there would be a bidding war on that song. He thought I’d get enough to cover tuition for next semester at least. And producers were angling to get me into the studio to put words to music that was already written. That was an alternative way of working, but Rafe said he’d help me navigate it. And I believed him.

“So, I was thinking…” He paused and pressed his lips to the top of my head, the fingers on his left hand playing a delicate tune on the piano keys.

  “What?”

“Why don’t we hop the flight to Hawaii with Dion and Nik?” he asked.

“Don’t I have work to do?”

“No,” he said with a chuckle. “I have work to do looking at all of these requests. But I can do it from Hawaii.”

  “It’s awfully last-minute.”

“Babe, I want us to get out of LA for a few days,” he said. “And see you in a bikini.”

  “I don’t wear bikinis,” I stated.

“Even better,” he said with a mischievous grin.

I elbowed him. “I wear a rash guard and board shorts. And a hat.”

“How the hell do you even swim in that?”

“Have you seen my complexion? My skin turns red just thinking about the beach.”

“You were made for dark clubs, is that what you’re saying?”

I sighed. “I was made for Southern California as long as I’m wearing sunblock. What about Presley? We should go to Utah.”

“She’s on lockdown,” Rafe pointed out.

That was a good point. She wasn’t allowed visitors until she was there for fourteen days.

“We’ll only be gone a few days,” he continued. “You still won’t be able to see her when we get back to the mainland.” I opened my mouth to offer a counterargument. “And Vince is here if something happens. He’ll call us, and we’ll get on the first flight back.”

I sighed, out of arguments. “Is shit still unsettled with Grimm?”

“I think we’re in the clear, but a few days in paradise with you seems like the perfect way to avoid any last-minute blowback.”

“How bad was the shit he was into?”

“Don’t know, don’t really care,” he said. “That’s his problem. I just want to make sure you are free and clear. And get your deals done so you can move on with your life. Realize your dreams and all that shit.”

I laid my hand on top of his, my fingers following his as he continued creating a beautiful tune. “I think I already have.”

His hands stilled, and the music stopped. We sat at the piano bench, side by side, our thighs touching, in silence. My rapid breath caused my chest to raise and lower. I glanced to the side and caught him staring at me.

“I love you,” he said, wrapping his hand around mine.

Tears sprung into my eyes. “Rafe,” I whispered.

“Nope,” he said. “You’re just going to say something about how it’s too soon. Or you don’t deserve me. Or that you have nothing to bring to this. To us.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but he cut me off before I could even start the lie.

“You’re wrong,” he said. “You’ve given me my dream. Because of you, I have my own label. Because of you, I am no longer the adopted Davis in Rogue Nation, the charity case. And I am no longer living in my dead father’s shadow. Because of you, I’ve found myself.”

  I swallowed. “Rafe—”

“No, you aren’t fighting me on this,” he continued. “All this time, you thought you needed me? Beanpole, I needed you so much more.”

“Rafe, I love you too,” I blurted out before he cut me off again. “Now would you stop calling me that and kiss me?”

His arm snaked around my back, and he pulled me into him. I tilted my face up to his.

“That I can do,” he said against my mouth.

And then Rafe kissed me. I closed my eyes as his lips pressed against mine. My body melted into his as my heart soared. I had next semester’s tuition covered, a burgeoning career, a place to call my own. And I had a man who believed in me and fought through a lot of my bullshit to help me get to a place where I finally, finally believed in myself.

And I was about to get laid by the sexiest rock god on the planet.

I, Jett Benson, had found my happily ever after.

  Before you go…

  About the Author

Elle Greco writes contemporary romance about bad-ass women and the people who love them.

Under the name Karen Greco, she’s published three books (and one novella) in the urban fantasy series Hell’s Belle.

While the genres she writes in are worlds apart, strong female characters are the chain that links them together.

These women are magical. They wield wicked weapons. They play a mean drum solo. They fall in love. They rule the boardroom and the bedroom.

Whatever they do, they do it with swagger.
