“I’m glad you found me, too, Kenny. You saved my life.” She looked up at him. “Or maybe I should say that you gave me life. You gave me a new life. You are an angel from God that gave me a new life filled with happiness and adventure. I’m so very happy, Kenny. You have made me so happy.”
The two of them turned and went back into the cabin. They worked together to clean up the mess left behind by their guests. They went to sleep that night with peace in their hearts and hope for the future.
EPILOGUE
EPILOGUE
The sun was lowering itself in the west as the couple went from the church through a park to a cabin that had been loaned to them by a friend of Adam’s in Louisville. Becky and Kenny had waited two more months and let things settle in Wickenburg before they decided to marry. They had plenty of time to be together, as they were never apart during that time except when Kenny went into Wickenburg for supplies. Sometimes he would travel to Louisville if he had the feeling he would encounter Bruce.
The people of Wickenburg had gotten wind of the truth, but, much as Adam and Mark had predicted, none of them informed Bruce of Becky’s whereabouts. They were so hush-hush about it, Bruce started to notice that they were treating him differently. He’d questioned Sam about it, but the bartender feigned ignorance.
The carriage they were riding in took them around the park several times. The weather was beginning to cool off. Becky was wearing her large jacket and was still cuddled up against Kenny against the cold breeze that blew over her face.
“Darling, do you want to end this ride and go to the cabin? I can see you are very cold.”
“We can take one more ride around the park if you want to, Kenny.”
Kenny could see that Becky was miserably cold. He tapped the driver in front of him on the shoulder and said, “Take us to the cabin please.”
He sat back. Becky looked up at him. “You didn’t have to do that. I know you want to ride around. You love riding around.”
Kenny laughed. “I do like a good long carriage ride, but not when my bride is freezing her nose off. We will go back to the cabin and warm up. We’ll take another ride tomorrow when it is warmer. When the sun is out.”
“That sounds lovely.”
“I’m sure you are getting hungry too. We must have something to eat.”
“Is there food in the cabin?”
Kenny chuckled low. “My dear, do you think they would leave us with a cabin that had no food in it?”
Becky joined him in his laughter. “No, I suppose they wouldn’t. The cabin belongs to a friend of Adam’s?”
“Yes. They aren’t in town right now so they loaned it to us for our honeymoon. The cabin, the food, and wine therein are a present from them and from Adam and Alice.”
“Oh, there’s wine?” Becky giggled. “That will warm me up, I know.”
“It certainly will. And I plan to warm you up myself, too. I’ll hold you closer to me than you’ve ever experienced before in your life.”
“My life has changed so much, Kenny,” Becky said in a low voice. He lowered his head so that he could hear her better. “I am… I am afraid of what will come in the future.”
“You don’t have to worry about Bruce ever coming back. You are my wife now. He has no legal standing with you. None at all.”
“I know that, my love. I just… it’s not necessarily about Bruce. It’s about everything that is changing in my life. I don’t know… I don’t know how I’ll handle everything being so different.”
“You can do it. I’ll be right by your side. You will never be alone again.”
“You better not go anywhere. You better be very careful. I want to be with you for as long as I live.”
“I feel the same way.”
“I am so grateful that we found each other. That you came into my room that night and whisked me away. That you dared to go back into the house and even speak to my brother and take my things away. I am amazed by you.”
“I hope you know why I did all of those things for you.” Kenny said, gazing into her hazel eyes. He loved staring at the ring of blue around the green.
“I believe I know why you did it.”
“It’s because I love you. I’ve loved you from the moment I laid eyes on you. I was so afraid to commit to it, to let myself understand how much I needed and wanted you. I held out for as long as I could. But with the way I was seeing you were being treated by that brother of yours…” he shook his head. “I couldn’t take it forever. I had to do something. I had to get you out of there.”
“And you did. And now I’m married to you and we will someday have children and I’m going to run the toy shop you were talking about.”
“Alice came up with a really good idea. Our toys will be famous. We will end up having a huge corporation in New York City, just you watch.”
“New York City!” Becky sounded amazed. “That would be simply amazing!”
“I know it would. I look forward to it.”
“I don’t know if I can live in a place where there are so many people. There are a lot of people in New York City, isn’t there? A lot more than Wickenburg.”
Kenny laughed. “Oh yes, my dear. There are many, many more people there than here in Wickenburg. You don’t have to worry though. I am never getting rid of my cabin. If we decide to give New York City a try and you don’t like it, or I don’t like it, we’ll just come back here and run our little shop for the fine folks of Louisville and Wickenburg. I’m sure they will buy our toys.”
“People are never going to stop having children, after all.” Becky laughed.
“We’ll have to make sure that our children test out our toys. If they don’t like them, we know other children won’t either.”
Becky laughed. “Yes, I suppose so. Oh, Kenny, I’m so excited about my new future with you. We are going to make things so much brighter in this world with our toys.”
“And with our love,” Kenny supplied, leaning down to kiss her cold lips. “Because I will always love you, Becky. I don’t think I could make myself stop even if I tried.”
“I feel the same way, Kenny. And I know what toys I want to sell first.”
He smiled. “Stuffed animals?”
She returned his smile. “Yes. Stuffed animals.”
They met in another long, warm kiss.
